Job Summary

The ACUHO-I Summer Intern at the University of Michigan – Flint will serve as an integral member of the Housing and Residential Life team. In addition to working with UM-Flint’s summer conference program, the summer intern would provide shared supervision of undergraduate staff, revise manuals, manage unique projects for the office, maintain customer service operations and facilities.

Specific responsibilities are listed below. The Summer Intern will also gain exposure to other functional assignments within the office.

The UM-Flint campus opened the first residence hall in the history of the campus in August 2008 and added an additional residence hall in June 2016.  As we continue to grow, we are seeking an Intern who is excited and passionate about being able to make their mark in the development and implementation of our housing and residential life program.  This is an opportunity for a dedicated professional who truly wants to make a difference and learn about Housing and Residential Life.

As an Intern in the Housing and Residential Life Office at the University of Michigan-Flint you will achieve:

An understanding and appreciation for student affairs and housing operations at a small, public, urban institution. Marketable experiences within Housing and Residential programs. An opportunity to contribute in independent initiatives and projects as well as engage with students and professionals at UM-Flint. An experience in Housing and Residential Life that challenges the Intern to grow, learn and develop new skill sets wile contributing his/her knowledge to the position responsibilities and collaborative efforts.

Areas of responsibilities:

  • Assist with the summer orientation programs and Overnight Admission events.
  • Assist with the supervision of summer staff (RAs, Front Desk, and Conference Assistants).
  • Assist with the development of fall training modules for Resident Advisors and Front Desk.
  • Assist the Housing and Residential Life office with responsibilities such as room assignments and summer mailings for residents.
  • Assist with Summer Conference Operations.
  • Assist with building turn and preparation for opening.
  • Participate in the on-call duty rotation.
  • Additional duties to be determined based on the interests of the successful candidate.

? Supervision Received

Direct supervision received from the Associate Director of Residence Life and Assistant Director of Housing. Secondary supervision received from the Housing Coordinator. The Housing and Residential Life team meets weekly with the summer intern to discuss objectives, progress towards goals, and review internship concerns


The Intern will have a positive attitude, initiative, creative energy and a willingness to learn.


The intern will receive a private bedroom in a furnished suite that includes a kitchenette, living room, and bathroom. It will have cable, internet and utilities provided. Access to the gym in the residence hall. An hourly wage of $12.00 per hour will be paid for hours worked in this position.  The hours scheduled per week may vary between 20-32 hours and will be determined by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications*


Employment will be between May 7, 2018 – August 31, 2018. Start and end dates are negotiable, based on interns academic calendar.

Applicant must have obtained a Bachelor Degree prior to the start date of this position.

Applicant must completed an application at to the ACUHO-I Housing Internship Program.
