As a Referral Coordinator with Michigan Medicine, you will use a variety of clerical, computer and interpersonal skills.  We’ll work with you to master our electronic medical record (MiChart) and radiology-specific programs. Your primary work is to contact insurance carriers to obtain authorizations for Radiology procedures.  Channels of communications with these carriers, our websites, fax and telephone.  Justification for ordering the procedure is dependent on the documentation obtained in MiChart from the healthcare provider documentation.  Based on the insurance carriers authorization criteria,  it is feasible that the ordering physician may be requested to assist with the authorization process. Our Referral Coordination team is close-knit groups with a focus on patient care that provide continual learning opportunities.

The Referral Coordinator is responsible for obtaining, processing and tracking insurance referrals and authorizations for outpatient procedures rendered in the Department of Radiology.

The staff person is responsible for maintaining a large scope of knowledge regarding insurance plans and requirements in an ever-changing environment.

Ability to be successful prioritizing workload in a high volume area.

Ability to respond to patient and customer's questions comprehensively and in a timely manner.

Work from MiChart schedules and work queues to identify services that need approval.

Serve as a resource for staff and physicians and act as a liaison between the physicians, collection specialists, and patients in the referral process. This includes field and respond to patient inquiries regarding their authorization and/or referral.

Required Qualifications*

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills with the ability to work with third party insurance carriers on a regular basis.
  • Ability to manage stress effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills. Attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a very busy clinical setting.
  • Work independently, and the ability to prioritize workload.
  • Reasonable experience in a hospital business office, private practice, insurance office or related setting is necessary.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Proven experience multitasking.

Work Schedule

20 hours, day shift

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
