Responsibilities*

The University of Michigan Health System, regionally and nationally known for its commitment to providing high quality, family-centered patient care is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner for our Pediatric Service in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Our non-physician providers (NPPs) serve as integral members of a multidisciplinary team providing advanced diagnostic care and therapeutic interventions for patients across the continuum of age and acuity levels.  Joining our pediatric service provides an opportunity to work alongside a team of professionals dedicated to the care of our youngest patients.  As a key member of the clinical team, the NPP will be expected to treat patients autonomously conducting both independent and shared clinic visits. The NPP will assist surgeons in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and provide service continuity in the outpatient operative setting (including preoperative care, postoperative care, as well as management of non-operative patient conditions) under the direction of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Service. 

Responsibilities include: obtaining a detailed history; performing a comprehensive musculoskeletal physical examination; presenting pertinent information to the medical staff; interpretation of diagnostic and laboratory tests; perform various therapeutic and minor surgical procedures; assist surgeons in the operating room (as needed); serve as a resource to administrative (administrative assistants and call center staff) and medical (nursing, medical assistants and athletic trainers) staff on a daily basis; coordinate care plans as needed; administer follow-up to patients and assist in referring to various internal and external facilities; provide routine orthopaedic services effectively and efficiently; compile and record detailed narrative evaluations.  The incumbent is expected to call patients and be available to answer questions in support of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Service.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position.

Required Qualifications*

NP:

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan.
  • Graduate of Accredited Nurse Practitioner program as a Family NP, or Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner is preferred 
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

PA:

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.

Required Qualifications (NP & PA):  

  • Experience with surgical patient care required
  • One (1) year of Orthopaedic Surgery experience as a PA/NP is required, however, Pediatric Orthopaedic PA/NP experience is preferred. 
  • Demonstrate experience in evaluation and care of preoperative and postoperative surgical patients.  
  • Demonstrate ability to prioritize, problem solve, and delegate effectively and efficiently. 
  • Demonstrate ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team member on the Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Service and with other Orthopaedic Surgery non-physician providers. 
  • Must have the ability to interact well with pediatric patients and their families. 
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and patient service skills.  
  • Demonstrate leadership in a professional healthcare setting and other professional activities. 
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills highly desirable. 
  • Some flexibility in work schedule will be necessary.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or as a Physician Assistant.  
  • Demonstrated active participation in professional development 
  • Pediatric Orthopaedic experience as a NP or PA

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 per week
Shift/Hours/Days: Day shift; 5 days per week . Flexiblity in scheduling will be required.
Location: Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery- C.S. Mott Children's Hospital

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
