The Access and User Services team advances the mission of the library by providing valuable services to patrons and library staff. This includes the coordination and delivery of customer service including: circulation services, library information services, basic reference services, campus information services and course reserves support. This position will be filled by 3 successful candidates. The reporting locations will be in the Hatcher/Shapiro Libraries and the Duderstadt Center.

  • Perform routine circulation duties, create and maintain patron accounts, resolve and troubleshoot complex circulation issues

  • Conduct regular rounds and head counts of large library facilities; collaborate with U-M Police and Plant Operations to handle and report incidents

  • Regularly assist with building closures at multiple libraries; communicate building access policy to library users; manage room reservations

  • Participate as a member of the Building Incident Response Team (BIRT); attend team meetings, maintain current emergency protocol and procedures information. Assist in quickly evacuating buildings due to a fire condition or directing people to shelter in the event of severe weather

  • Handle basic printer, computer, copier maintenance and troubleshooting; report technology issues as appropriate

  • Provide basic reference and information services

  • Manage lost and missing material processes and procedures for both locations

  • Assist with processing and maintaining the University Reserves print collection

  • Design and maintain public and staff web pages, printed information, and/or digital displays

  • Plan, train and assign work for temporary student assistants

  • Develop training guides and other procedural documentation

  • Serve as a member of the Hatcher Gallery team, coordinating events and scheduling

Required Qualifications*

  • High school graduate with one to three years of customer service experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

  • Strong communication skills and demonstrated ability to adapt/respond to different types of questions and situations

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively

  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with students, faculty, staff, and guests  with a commitment to meeting their information and research needs

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative environment

  • Demonstrated success learning new technology and computer software, including email and calendaring systems

  • Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion. Commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization

Work Schedule

This opening has three positions to be filled by three successful candidates. The positions have different reporting locations and work schedules.  

  • One position will be located in Hatcher/Shapiro Libraries with a 3:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. work shift and a Friday-Tuesday work week.

  • The second position will be located in the Hatcher/Shapiro Libraries with a 5:30 p.m. - 2:30 a.m. work shift and a Sunday-Thursday work week.

  • The third position will be located in the Duderstadt Center with a 9:30 p.m. - 6:30 a.m. work shift and a Sunday-Thursday work week.

Work schedules may be modified based on operational needs.  


Additional Information

The person in this position routinely moves through the building to perform patron  counts and access materials. Occasionally ascend/descends ladders to retrieve materials.  Must be able to navigate the facility using the stairs during an emergency. Ability to move and/or transport materials that weigh up to 25 pounds.
