Job Summary

Cancer Registrar – abstracting position provides technical duties to accession, abstract, follow-up, analysis and reporting cancer related diagnoses.  In addition, this individual is responsible for assuring the confidentiality, accuracy and timeliness of all cancer related health information encountered.  Maintains open communication with all clinic areas as well as handles correspondence from other registries and agencies on patient diagnosis, treatment and follow- up information.

Responsibilities*

  • Abstracting
    • Abstracts all new cancer diagnoses and/or other reportable neoplasms
    • Review electronic medical record (MiChart – EPIC)
    • Inputs all required data elements into the cancer registry database (Elekta – Metriq)
    • Uses criteria established by the Michigan Cancer Surveillance Program (MCSP) and the American College of Surgeons – Commission on Cancer (ACoS-CoC)
  • Meetings
    • Attend departmental meetings
    • Meet departmental quality and quantity standards for work performance
    • Expand job-related knowledge and skills by attending and participating in in-service and staff meetings
    • Continued ongoing learning and use of additional references to assure accuracy in decision making
    • Work and communicate effectively with co-workers, physicians, administration and others, when applicable to accomplish organizational goals
    • Perform other duties as assigned in order to maintain efficiency of the unit
  • Credentials
    • Maintain professional credentials
      • Associate degree i.e. (RHIT) Registered Health Information Technologist
      • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)
      • Attend one educational session annually required by the CoC
  • Participate in Cancer Registry department meetings to effectively discuss, resolve or interpret complicated registry functions to maintain consistency and continuity

    • Assist in achieving departmental and area specific goals

      • Associate degree i.e. (RHIT) Registered Health Information Technologist
      • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)
    • Assure that all legal requirements, including Federal (HIPAA) and State regulations are met
    • Demonstrates an awareness of legal/confidentiality issues and adheres to all HIPAA Privacy and Security, Organizational and Departmental Policies and Procedures
    • Perform all duties as assigned
    • Participates in development and attainment of departmental and workgroup goals

  • Education
    • Required – Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)
    • Associates Degree with experience in all aspects of cancer registry operations and cancer program standards
    • RHIT or RHIA with CTR – preferred
  • Experience
    • Minimum of 5 years work experience in a cancer registry
    • Extensive knowledge and experience case-finding, accessioning, abstracting, follow up processes, analysis and reporting cancer related diagnoses

Must be able to tolerate working under stress, limited time constraints and with frequent interruptions and deadlines
