Job Summary

A research position is available for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Giancarlo Vanini’s laboratory in the Department of Anesthesiology and the Center for Consciousness Science at the University of Michigan.  The candidate will work on NIH-funded studies to better understand the mechanisms underlying the sleep-anesthesia connection.  Specifically, the studies will explore how sleep- and wake-related neurons in the hypothalamus regulate the entry into and exit from the anesthetized state, sleep and wakefulness, and homeostatic sleep-anesthesia interactions.  In addition, studies will assess how these subcortical neurons influence corticocortical communication.  To this end, the laboratory uses behavioral assays, chemogenetics, viral tracing, immunohistochemistry, quantitative EEG and functional connectivity analyses.

Required Qualifications*

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in neuroscience or related field.  Strong expertise in rodent stereotaxic survival surgery, animal behavior and experimentation, and scientific writing including a publication track record is required.  Candidate experience in neuroanatomy, immunohistochemistry, chemogenetics, and sleep and/or anesthesia research is highly desired.
