The Clinical Nursing Director will plan and manage clinical and administrative operations with 24/7 accountability and responsibility for Children’s Emergency Services (CES), a 33-bed Pediatric Emergency Department.
CES is a primary entry point for pediatric patients 0-20 years of age admitted to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, a verified Level One Pediatric Trauma Center and tertiary care facility with referrals from across the state. CES nurses partner with board-certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty and pediatric residents to provide expert family-centered emergency care to greater than 30,000 patients who present each year with injuries and illness across the range of acuity from minor to critical care. The Emergency Department provides staff nurses and nurse leaders financial support for required competency training to include ENPC, TNCC, PALS, & ACLS. In addition, obtaining professional certification (CPEN, CEN, TCRN) in emergency or trauma care is highly encouraged, and financial support is provided.
CES is a two-time recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award. The Lantern Award is a recognition award given to emergency departments that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research. The award is a visible symbol of an emergency department’s commitment to quality, the presence of a healthy work environment, and accomplishment in incorporating evidence-based practice and innovation into emergency care.
The Clinical Nursing Director plans and manages the clinical and administrative emergency department operations, with responsibility for the following: assuring implementation of patient care and quality standards; planning, organizing and evaluating pediatric clinical practice; educational activities; participating in planning, development and implementation of unit policies, goals and objectives and standards of nursing practice; counseling and evaluating the performance and clinical practice of the nursing staff; oversight of staff development and unit orientation programs to ensure compliance with practice standards; identification and resolution of unit operational problems; represent the unit on assigned clinical area and health-system committees; maintain compliance with federal and state regulations, and accreditation standards regarding affirmative action, safety, and patient care; actively collaborate in the development of annual budgets; manage and provide variance reporting of activity, payroll, commodity and capital budgets; participate in/lead new program development & implementation.
Unit goals and outcomes are achieved in collaboration with the Emergency Department Medical/MPlan Director, Service Chief, and Director of Emergency Department Operations. Works closely with the Medical/MPlan Director, Associate Chief Nursing Officer, and Senior Nursing Director of Pediatrics to create and support an environment where cutting-edge and innovative emergency care is provided to a growing patient population.
- Develop and implement unit goals and objectives which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consistent with national professional and regulatory guidelines.
- Integrate unit goals and objectives with Nursing Service goals and objectives. Advise and assist with the establishment of priorities and institutional program development.
- Work closely with medical staff and other disciplines for the successful implementation of patient, unit and institutional objectives. Assist in the resolution of interdisciplinary operating problems.
- Supervise operations of the unit. Establish minimum/maximum staffing patterns to ensure quality patient care. Initiate and implement a staffing schedule which is consistent with care requirements and responds to varying patient activity and acuity.
- Identify and recommend specific staffing needs and position qualifications consistent with emergency department goals and objectives.
- Interview and select qualified personnel.
- Evaluate performance of nursing staff responsible for patient care. Make recommendations for merit awards and personnel classification changes. Counsel and discipline nursing staff to enable achievement of the emergency department and institutional objectives, particularly as related to high-quality patient care.
- Interpret and implement University and hospital personnel policies and programs and ensure their uniform and correct application.
- Project and monitor personnel budget for the emergency department. Provide information regarding budget variances with action plans.
- Collaborate and coordinate with other disciplines to plan, evaluate, and implement the commodity budget for the emergency department.
- Collaborate with Education Nurse Coordinators to initiate and implement education that supports orientation to patient care responsibilities and staff development. Encourage and provide opportunities for continuing education of the nursing staff.
- Initiate, plan, analyze, and participate in nursing staff development programs and workshops.
- Participate in the concurrent and retrospective evaluation of patient care consistent with the hospital quality improvement program. Through this review process, evaluate and recommend changes and improvements in areas affecting the quality of patient care, in keeping with regulatory standards.
- Establish guidelines with the nursing faculty, which support the institutional goal of providing the primary clinical environment for nursing students. Facilitate, coordinate, and monitor the clinical experience of nursing and other students.
- Initiate and cooperate in the applied research in healthcare in keeping with the institutional objectives of maintaining prominence in developing new modes of clinical practice.
- Formulate personal, professional goals and prepare written annual self-evaluation for the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) and Senior Nursing Director for Pediatrics.

- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Master's degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered). If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a nurse leader of an operational unit in an acute/critical care setting.
- Minimum of five (5) years of Emergency Department experience with demonstration of progressive leadership and clinical competence.
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical pediatric experience in an acute/critical care setting.
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills including personnel management and the ability to perform as a role model for nursing staff.
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a manner that fosters team building and provides visionary direction for team members.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers, and staff of all disciplines to enhance and improve patient care outcomes.
- Evidence of successful change management.
- Evidence of successful implementation of quality initiatives positively impacting patient care.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, encourage and support a positive work environment.

- Five (5) years Nurse Manager experience in an Emergency Department setting.
- Five (5) years Nurse Manager experience in a Pediatric Emergency Department setting.
- Expertise in emergency care nursing initiatives.
- Expertise in the continuous quality improvement process.
- Experience with interest-based problem solving and negotiations.
- Experience/training in disaster preparedness.
- Professional certification in Pediatric Emergency Nursing (CPEN), Emergency Nursing (CEN), or Trauma Nursing (TCRN).
- Professional certification in nursing leadership (i.e., NE-BC or CNML).
Hours: 40 hours/week with 24/7 accountability
