Job Summary

Help the University of Michigan to positively impact pre-college learning, residential learning, global and lifelong learning, and public engagement! The Office of Academic Innovation is seeking a creative Marketing Communications Specialist to develop and execute a wide range of communications projects for external and internal audiences including U-M faculty, students, staff, learners around the world, and the public.

Key areas of responsibility include composing and coordinating content for social media posts, writing blog content and press releases, creating website content for Academic Innovation Initiatives, developing email marketing messaging in collaboration with the AI Marketing Specialist, developing event invitations and descriptions in collaboration with the AI Events and Marketing Specialist, as well as implementing communications strategies for the Office of Academic Innovation.

The new Marketing Communications Specialist, working as a member of the Marketing team of the Office of Academic Innovation, drives impact by:

  • Creating and/or shaping the development of new social media, blog post, press release, newsletter, email marketing, website, and written print collateral content
  • Working with teams within the Office of Academic Innovation as well as faculty and leaders across schools and units
  • Collaborating with internal and community partners to create and scale new opportunities for awareness, enrollment, engagement, and event attendance

This position reports to the Associate Director of Marketing under the leadership of the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Innovation.   • Write compelling communications content as part of the marketing and communications plan for AI using AI brand voice and style, including communications using the AI website, blog, partner websites, MailChimp, social networks, and other channels
  • Generate, research and identify ideas for stories, and organize a content calendar that highlight students, faculty, staff and alumni that are working on efforts that advance the mission and vision of Academic Innovation
  • Participate in ongoing design and management of the website and related user experience
  • Identify appropriate delivery methods, including but not limited to case studies, press releases, blog posts, presentations, targeted email outreach, social media campaigns, and newspaper articles
  • Prepare follow-up materials for event attendees and donors
  • Source and edit content including interviews and/or guest content with deans, faculty, students and alumni, and inquiries to ensure published pieces are accurate and relevant
  • In collaboration with the Marketing Specialist, develop email communications including updates regarding new Initiatives and events
  • In collaboration with the Events and Marketing Specialist, develop event descriptions and invitations
  • Assist with reviewing and editing landing page copy
  • Provide training and technical assistance to academic and community partners to ensure the effective use of the communications developed
  • Developing content that supports the fundraising efforts of the Academic Innovation team

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or another relevant field
  • Minimum 5 years additional experience in communications, media relations, or other relevant field
  • Excellent communication, organization and planning skills
  • Experience in coordinating and developing communications across a variety of marketing channels
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to a non-technical audience
  • Experience interacting with media representatives
  • Expertise in using web-based tools and technologies (e.g., Google Analytics, MailChimp, social networking applications and media sharing sites) and website content management software
  • Understanding of social media, blog management, and related best practices
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite software, particularly Photoshop and InDesign
  • Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities and take initiative, while keeping supervisor and project leads in the loop
  • Demonstrated initiative, independent judgment, diplomacy, and service-oriented attitude
  • Strong commitment to teamwork and problem solving, as well as the ability to act independently
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage workload under time constraints and conflicting demands
  • Ability to work well in a multicultural and collaborative environment

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, English, or another relevant field
  • Familiarity with academic/University-based communications, procedures and processes
  • Experience managing and editing communications within WordPress
  • Ability to take, edit, format and organize photos
