Job Summary

Rackham Graduate School seeks six (6) part-time (20 hours per week) temporary Program Assistants to provide assistance with the execution of the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP), Michigan Humanities Emerging Research Scholars (MICHHERS) and the Rackham Merit Fellowship (RMF) Programming.

These positions run from May 1, 2018 through August 31, 2018; availability during the appointment period is critical. Personal commitments that would require absence for an extended amount of time will eliminate applicants from consideration.

The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) at the University of Michigan is designed for outstanding undergraduate students who are underrepresented in their field of study. This program provides students with the opportunity to conduct an intensive graduate level research project with faculty and graduate students at the University of Michigan. The goal of this program is to: introduce students to and prepare them for advanced studies in a Ph.D. program at U-M; build professional and personal networks to support student’s interest in joining the academic community; and encourage students to apply to a Ph.D. program at U-M. This program will run from May 30-July 26. The Michigan Humanities Emerging Research Scholars (MICHHERS) program is designed to encourage rising seniors, recent B.A.s and terminal Master's students from diverse cultural, economic, geographic, and ethnic backgrounds to consider pursuing a doctoral degree in humanities at the University of Michigan. The summer research experience will run from June 11-23, 2018 and it will help students learn about the various fields within their chosen discipline along with the latest methodologies and developments from faculty in individual departments.

The Rackham Merit Fellowship (RMF) program helps sustain the academic excellence and inclusiveness of the Michigan graduate community. In addition to providing financial support, we enhance the educational experience of our fellows by supporting their transition, building community, recognizing their contributions and by supporting their personal and academic development. Programming is offered throughout the summer and culminates in a two-week program for incoming Rackham Merit Fellows from August 13-24, 2018.

Late afternoon and early evening work will be required; possible weekend work may be required with advance notice. Schedule varies based on needs of program.

The hourly pay rate is $22 per hour.

Responsibilities*

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Work with professional staff in the Rackham Graduate School to assist in the execution of activities that will be part of the undergraduate Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP), Michigan Humanities Emerging Research Scholars (MICHHERS) or programming for Rackham Merit Fellows.

Assisting program coordinator with the execution of program content; working closely with Rackham staff, departmental faculty, and other university administrators to plan logistics for events;  assisting with the development of program evaluation tools; facilitating communication between staff and participants; anticipating and resolving participant problems or concerns; completing related administrative tasks such as drafting documents, data entry, data management, photocopying, attending weekly meetings.

Assisting SROP and MICHHERS will also include: facilitating cohort building activities; administration of weekly seminars; assisting students with graduate school applications; and one-on-one meetings with student participants.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduate experience at the University of Michigan is required; more than one year is strongly preferred. Applicants must be currently registered in a Rackham graduate program. Students who are unsure if they are in a Rackham graduate program should check their graduate program listing in http://www.rackham.umich.edu/programs-of-study.
  • Previous experience in SROP, MICHHERS and/or the Rackham Merit Fellowship Program is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in and understanding program development and implementation.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to maintain confidentiality in matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects with excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of personal computer productivity tools including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and electronic communication, social media, and calendaring software packages.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and capacity to exercise independent initiative.
  • Familiarity with diversity issues in higher education and experience in peer mentoring.
  • Reasonable knowledge of University and departmental policies and procedures, University organization, and University protocol and governance.
