To provide clinical leadership in pain management and direct care to patients on the Pediatric Acute Pain Service.

Organizational Relationships:

  • Supervision of professional nursing practice and administrative responsibilities is received from the Director of Pediatric Nursing
  • Supervision for delegated medical function and Pain Service programming is received from the Pediatric Pain Service Medical Director
  • Collaborative relationship with Pediatric Acute Pain Service Nursing Supervisor
  • Collaborative/Consultative relationships are maintained with other care providers, clinicians, disciplines and departments.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct Patient;
  • Conducts a comprehensive pediatric holistic wellness and illness assessment using established or innovative techniques, tools and methods.
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to integrate the nursing perspective into a comprehensive plan of care for the pediatric patient/family which includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. For pain management.
  • Identifies and prioritizes nursing care needs for select populations of patient/families
  • Designs and evaluates education programs for patients, families and groups.
  • Identifies, collects and analyzes data that serve as a basis for program design and outcome measurement.
  • Facilitates open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
  • Establishes methods to evaluate and document nursing interventions.
  • Serves as a reliable source of information on evidence supporting cost-effective, safe pediatric nursing practices.

Nursing/Nursing Practice

  • Creates a nursing care environment that stimulates continuous self reflective practice, feeling of ownership and demonstration of responsibility and accountability.
  • Collaborates with others to resolve pediatric patient care issues by identifying and addresses barriers that affect patient outcomes.
  • Leads clinical pediatric pain practice by collaborating with nurse to develop critical thinking, clinical judgment and evaluating patient care and safety.
  • Creates and revises nursing policies, procedures, and collaborative protocols using evidence-based information and patient-family centered care principles
  • Collaborates on the content and design of orientation, clinical competencies and other clinical education programs on pain management and comfort.
  • Educates and mentors nurse to acquire and build on their pain management skills and effectively incorporate evidence into nursing practice and patient care.
  • Provides formal and informal education for nurses and other health professionals and students.
  • Provides input for staff evaluation.
  • Initiates/leads/participates in the conduction and utilization of nursing research.

Organization/System Leadership

  • In collaboration with the Medical Director and Director of Pediatric Nursing develops and implements goals and quality improvement activities for the Pediatric Acute Pain Service
  • Consults with other units and health care professionals to improve patient care and pain management
  • Leads/assists institutional groups to enhance the clinical practice of nurses and to improve patient outcomes.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates pain programs and models of practice across the continuum of care
  • Designs and evaluates programs and initiatives that are congruent with the organization?s strategic plans, regulator agency requirements and nursing standards.
  • Initiates/participates in collaborative research on pain management issues and patient care issues.
  • Participates in need identification, selection and evaluation of products and equipment
  • Advances nursing practice and pain management through participation in professional organizations publications and presentations.

Required Qualifications*

  • Current licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Michigan 
  • Master's degree in nursing with a clinical focus 
  • Graduate of a Clinical Nurse Specialist Program 
  • Population focused certification as a Family or Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist recognized by NCSBN*
  • Graduate preparation must have included clinical application of the CNS role component*.
  • 5 years experience as an RN assessing, treating and evaluating patients typically cared for by the Pediatric Acute Pain Service 
  • 3  years in Pediatric Nursing
  • Demonstrated ability to apply evidence-based clinical knowledge into the patient care setting protocols, standards and outcome measurement. 
  • Ability to function independently, collaboratively and as a team member. 
  • Excellent written and verbal skills as evidenced by feedback through references and/or evaluations. 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence complex change projects and processes. 
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence change 
  • Competence with basic computer function and able to use various applications for internet, literature search, presentations, word processing, data management and clinical systems. 
*Internal UMHS employees currently in a Clinical Nurse Specialist role will be considered for this job opening and CNS certification will not be required.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in designing and collaborating with the implementation of competency and educational activities for nurses.
  • Strong teaching skills as evidenced by the ability to demonstrate a teachable moment, development of class content and the development of staff and patient education materials.
  • ANCC, Board certification in pain management (current or to be obtained in 4 years)
  • Knowledge and experience with the Continuous Quality Improvement Process.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather data, collate and present recommendations for solutions to identified problems.
  • Experience of professional writing and being published in professional periodicals.
  • Previous experience as co-investigator on a research project.
  • Eligibility for appointment in the School of Nursing.

Work Schedule

Hours: 24 hours per week
Shift: Day shift but requires flexibility to cover off shifts when needed to meet patient needs.
Location: Mott Children's Hospital-Pediatric Pain Service
