The Global Scholars Program (GSP) is a living-learning community, and students in their first year of the program are required to enroll in ALA 210 Addressing Critical Global Issues (2 credits in Fall term) and ALA 211 Addressing Critical Global Issues (2 credits in the Winter term).
These signature courses for first-year GSPstudents center on identifying global social justice problems and designing and maintaining interventions. In the Fall term (ALA 210), students will study the development of human rights claims-making and struggles and learn and apply core concepts from areas such as political economy, public policy, international cooperation, public health, and peace studies. We will critically examine the socio-political complexities of how problems arise, and identified as problems, and are categorized as needing solutions.
Students will attend one weekly lecture session with the instructional team (Lead Instructor + 2 GSIs). Additionally, students will meet once a week in small collaborative groups (CGs) to process content from the lecturer and readings, to undertake experiential learning activities, and to engage in in-depth discussions touching on a broad range of students’ personal experiences with topics we cover. CGs are comprised of approximately 10 students, each of which is peer-facilitated by two returning GSP student leaders. The expectations for CGs include developing a safe space where students can discuss and engage the sometimes emotional and personal dynamics of global disparities through dialogue with the understanding that opinions and values vary but a commitment to understanding one another’s personal and social contexts is key to working and learning effectively together. Fall/Winter GSP students are placed in the same CG for both terms in order to maintain as much continuity within groups as is possible.
This is an estimated .50 FTE appointment each. GSP GSIs are part of a dynamic instructional team that meets weekly to plan the lecturer sessions and implement the course objectives. GSIs share responsibility for grading, managing course platforms (Canvas, GradeCraft), and leading active learning strategies. While the two GSIs have some common responsibilities in relation to the weekly lecturer session, each of the GSIs will have specific responsibilities that differentiate them into two roles: A collaborative group curriculum coordinator and a global engagement internship coordinator.
Collaborative Group Curriculum Coordinator GSI: First-year GSP students are required to attend a weekly Friday lecture and a weekly Collaborative Group meeting (the CGs described above). Coordinating the CG curriculum entails: 1) providing leadership and creativity to the design of weekly CG meeting agendas and supplementary materials, 2) centralizing all correspondence related to CGs, including navigating scheduling and interpersonal challenges, communicating reminders and updates to CG members and leaders and updating the rest of the GSP staff on related matters, and 3) actively training, checking in with, and supporting peer facilitators (PFs) to ensure quality facilitation of the CG curricula.
Global Engagement Internship Coordinator GSI: A major feature of the first-year curriculum is the year-long global engagement internship (GEI), an intensive experiential learning project involving research and designing tools to take action on a designated global social justice issue with a partner organization (domestic or international nonprofit). The internship builds throughout the year and culminates in a presentation at the annual GSP symposium in April. The GEI provides students the opportunity to work together in diverse groups, deepen their research skills, and engage in an action-oriented intervention. Coordinating GEIs involves: 1) making initial contact and maintaining relationship with the partner organizations, 2) collaborating with the organization to develop a year-long project proposal that will ensure steady and on-time achievement of goals, 3) centralizing all correspondence related to the project, including communicating/grading related assignments, communicating with non-GSP campus partners, and 4) actively training, checking in with, and supporting peer facilitators to ensure the students’ successful completion of the GEI.
Note: Interested candidates will apply to the GSI position, not to a specific role. Preferences are invited and skill sets will be assessed during the interview process, and role decisions will be communicated when offers are extended.
Must be currently enrolled as a graduate student in good standing at the University of Michigan. Candidates must meet the language proficiency requirements set by the College of LSA. Outstanding ability to effectively teach and evaluate undergraduate students. Knowledge of issues of global social justice and intercultural dynamics. Experience in international relations, social justice education and/or experiential learning. Strong communication and student support skills. Availability for weekly Friday course lectures (1:00 pm), weekly meetings with student leaders, instructional team, and GSP staff. Some evenings and weekends.
The Fall and Winter installations of this course sequence are highly interconnected. For this reason, we strongly prefer candidates who would be interested/available in serving in this GSI position for both Fall and Winter semesters.
