Department Summary

The mission of the University of Michigan Recreational Sports is promoting a healthy lifestyle through engagement, leadership and activity. The Department operates multiple programs, four indoor facilities and two outdoor field complexes. The department consists of 36 full-time staff and over 650 student employees. Established in 1913, the department is considered to be one of the first collegiate recreation programs and is the first program to have a facility dedicated to student recreation (Intramural Sports Building, 1928). Recreational Sports reports to Student Life through the Associate Vice President of Student Life.

Job Summary

The Assistant Director provides administration and oversight of the Club Sports program and staff, to include full time staff, student supervisors, coaches, and athletes.  Provides strategic leadership and vision for the Club Sports program and staff.  This position will provide direct supervision to program staff and provide mentorship of student staff and create budgets, policies, procedures, and direct operations in all areas of oversight.  Serve on assigned committees to represent the Department.  Support all Recreational Sports Department initiatives as needed.


Program Oversight (50%):  Manage planning, promotion, organization, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of the Club Sports program and Camp Program.  Develop and deliver staff and Club Sports student officer training and education programs based on University expectations, best practices and industry standards.  Provide oversight of all club travel and facility scheduling.  Deliver high quality customer service.  Provide advice and organizational support for Clubs Sports and Camp Program.  Ensure program compliance with the Department of Recreational Sports and University policies.  Contribute to the promotion of the Club Sports Program through various media outlets.  Provide on-site supervision for large Club Sports events. Observe and evaluate select club practices and events.  Incorporate current and future technology practices into the Club Sports program and Camp Program. Design and utilize instruments to measure participant satisfaction and outcome related effectiveness of the Club Sports program and Camp Program; Collaborate with various units on and off campus to assist with programmatic needs such as HR, Risk Management, Licensing, Center for Campus Involvement, Office of Student Conflict Resolution, and Intercollegiate Athletics.

Staff Oversight (20%):  Provide supervision, direction, coaching and mentoring of direct reports; ensure direct reports represent the Department in a positive way; evaluate and provide regular feedback to direct reports; ensure the recruitment, hiring and development of student programming staff meets Department needs and goals.

Fiscal Oversight (15%):  Prepare, oversee, forecast, and manage the operating budgets of areas of oversight; approve expenditures from Department, gift, and agency funds for assigned clubs; ensure compliance of operations with Department, Division, and University policies; work collaboratively with Departmental financial staff and the Student Life Business Office.  Purchase and maintain inventory of all equipment and gear as needed. Establish and meet revenue goals.  Supervise overall program payroll.

Leadership (15%):  Provide departmental leadership; develop and enforce departmental policies; ensure the development of students in all areas of supervision; Serve on committees or work teams to support the Department, Division and University; collaborate with University colleagues to represent the Department. Provide leadership for development of comprehensive sports camps program. Develop and implement training and ongoing education programs for Club Sports officers, coaches, and participants.

Other Requirements:  Evening and weekend work responsibilities, as needed; be on-call to provide leadership during times programs and facilities are operating; attend professional development opportunities, as assigned; other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Recreation, or related field.                                                            
  • At least 3 years’ experience and demonstrated working knowledge of Club Sports program administration
  • Experience in travel coordination of Student Organizations, and understanding of policies, procedures and safety measures accompanying travel (regional and national)

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree (preferred) Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management and Communication, or related field
  • Sustained involvement in NIRSA or other professional associations
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Understanding of inherent risks related to Club Sports and athletic activity and willingness to enforce risk management requirements for the University with Club Sports
  • Proven effective leadership, management and mentoring for a student development focused program

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility

This position has oversight of the development and administration of the annual budgets in the Club Sports and Camps programs.  Additionally, this position is responsible for oversight and ensured compliance with university policies and procedures for multiple university accounts held for each Club Sport.  The total annual budget responsibility of this position is estimated to be $120,000.
