Department Summary

As a unit in Student Life, the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA) uses the framework of inclusive excellence to lead the campus community by delivering educational opportunities, programs and initiatives for all students. The unit takes a multi-dimensional approach that focuses on the intellectual and social development of students as they explore culture, race and ethnicity and their intersection with other identities.




Job Summary


Work within Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA) to promote student learning and development. In partnership with broad campus constituencies, this position provides support of the unit's efforts in peer mentorship programs, student organizations advising, leadership development with students, grant funding for student organizations among others. With guidance from Director and Associate Director, Program Manager will support and manage tasks related to the execution MESA programs and services.



Cultural Programming and Management (35%)

  • Coordinate and lead effort for at least one of the signature Heritage Month Programs. This includes event planning and execution marketing, branding and outreach, budget management and reporting to unit leadership, recruitment of students at all levels of programmatic involvement, evaluation and assessment, and partner with student organizations and other campus entities as appropriate.
  • Facilitate delivery of other programmatic components of unit initiatives grounded in social justice education, leadership development, cultural competency training and intra-and inter- group dialogue. Current initiatives include, but are not limited to, the MESA Affiliate Program (MAP), Growing Allies, Affinity Group Lunch Series and Student Grants Program. Perform the daily tasks and duties needed to execute the initiative goals.


Mentoring and Advising (25%)

  • Coordinate and lead or co-lead signature mentorship program(s) by partnering with a core team of student leaders.
  • Develop programmatic goals and curriculum design that align with the office goals and vision. This includes creating clear, attainable and measurable learning outcomes, and subsequent implementation of the program.
  • Directly advise and support student organization(s) representing the various multicultural/ethnic communities on campus. Use theoretical sound practices for leadership development around issues of diversity, race, ethnicity and social justice among students and their organizations. Advising includes attending meetings for the organization, executive board and/or with student individual leaders. Also, provide inclusive leadership development of the executive board, assist in the development of the organization, consult and support during the event/program planning and execution.
  • Supervise student staff and develop student leaders connected to programs.


Administration (20%)

  • Collect and maintain statistical information, databases, and evaluations/assessment of events/programs and other activities as required.
  • Work with sensitive and protected information with discretion and good judgment to maintain student confidentiality and attend to institutional risk-management concerns.
  • Assist in the development of a unit culture that is student-centered, utilizing a self-authorship philosophy to guide and collaborate with students and organizations.
  • Take personal responsibility for fostering a positive workplace climate in which staff and students feel engaged and empowered.
  • Foster excellent communication and maintain partnerships among administrative offices, academic departments, faculty resources and community resources to promote assigned work projects.
  • Assist in increasing the visibility of the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs.
  • Provide resources and information to students and their organization, responding effectively to the needs/concerns of the student population.


Collaboration and Outreach (10%)

  • Participate in TISM meetings/discussions for collective impact work across Trotter Multicultural Center, Intergroup Relations, Spectrum, and Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs, which is a collaborative space for examining our programming efforts and its impact on student learning and campus climate.
  • Build relationships and partnerships across the division of Student Life and throughout the University.
  • Serve on assigned working committee(s) expected by the division that support its strategic goals of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.


Other duties as assigned/Appropriate (10%)

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, or relevant field.

  • At least two years of experience in student affairs (graduate or professional) and/or related educational services work with emphasis on program and curriculum design and implementation skills.

  • A general understanding of Student Affairs philosophy and commitment to student development.

  • Direct experience, understanding and engagement with issues impacting diverse populations and those who have experience oppression, specifically in areas of race/ethnicity.

  • Experience working with student organizations in an advisory capacity.

Desired Qualifications*

  • 2 years full-time experience working in Student Affairs.

  • Extensive work experience or direct involvement working with multi ethnic and multi-racial student populations, preferred special focus working with Latinx, African American, and Native American student communities.

  • Multi-lingual preferred

  • Knowledgeable of national policies that impact underrepresented student population, such as DACA and DREAM Act.

  • Working knowledge of University policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated learning and/or work in the area of intercultural competence, social justice education and social identity development.

  • Ability to set expectations and achieve results while contributing to the larger unit goals & mission.


Additional Information

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility


  • Reconcile purchasing for programmatic work and monitor program specific budgets.
  • Work with student organizations to understand budget responsibilities.


Working conditions


  • The Program Manager works mostly in a professional office working settings and environment, and is expected to be flexible with irregular hours and sometime weekend depending on respectively responsible programs.
  • Flexible work schedule required for occasional weekend and evening programs.




Physical requirements


  • The Program Manager may sometime transport materials or items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
