Job Summary

LSA Advancement joyfully creates a culture of giving and engagement for the nation’s preeminent public liberal arts college. The main objective of this role is to support public relations and media relations initiatives to connect media outlets and journalists with news about the new programs, thought leadership, academic innovations, and news at LSA.  

The ideal candidate will be experienced in a variety of public relations tools and platforms; have extreme confidence in media outreach; know how to track, measure, and report out on media coverage; know how to research media outlets and journalists; and be a skilled writer with direct experience writing news and other forms of communications. Social media savvy, specifically an understanding of engaging with media and others via social, will be a plus.

The range for the senior position is low to mid 70s.


  • Coordinate media outreach, including developing and making proactive pitches and responding to incoming media requests and questions.
  • Collaborate closely with U-M’s Public Affairs office, Michigan News, and other university units to accomplish shared goals and exchange news, ideas, and information.
  • Write news articles, news releases, media pitches, stories, and other communications.
  • Develop materials and collateral for media meetings and interviews.
  • Research and maintain an active and robust database of media outlets, bloggers, and journalists.
  • Track, analyze, and report out on media coverage.
  • Organize and manage logistics for media meetings, media events, and other communications initiatives.
  • Support team of internal and external partners during crisis communications situations.
  • Assist LSA faculty and staff on media interviews.
  • Assist in developing message points, holding statements, and responses.
  • Research daily news coverage for LSA coverage and related, higher-education news.
  • Work in partnership with social media staff to incorporate media coverage and news pieces seamlessly into social media content and utilize social media to source news items.

Required Qualifications*

The most competitive candidates for the position will possess proactive public and media relations experience, strong collaborative instincts, excellent writing skills, a passion for news, understanding and appreciation of social media, a willingness to learn, and a strong sense of values. They will also need to be willing to support and create a culture which values the philosophy and practice of Positive Organizational Scholarship. In addition, candidates should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, marketing, or similar subject, and five or more years of direct and recent public relations/media relations work experience.
  • Exceptional writing and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in communications technology tools including but not limited to MS Word, Google applications, social media platforms, PR measurement tools, and digital content management systems.
  • Experience writing news stories, news releases, media pitches, and more.
  • Expertise in interpreting and utilizing media coverage analytics.
  • Experience and high comfort level using social media for public and media relations purposes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to navigate a decentralized work environment, using expertise and relationship-building skills to achieve objectives. 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate proactively with a wide variety of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Experience working with highly confidential and sensitive information.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Passion for the University of Michigan and the liberal arts.
  • Familiarity with news and media related to higher education.
  • Experience successfully pitching higher ed and national general news outlets.
  • Previous experience with local, in-state and national media outlets.
  • A strong “nose for news” and understanding how a variety of news topics and issues relate to liberal arts.
  • Experience/familiarity with photography, photo editing, graphic design software.
  • Collaborative spirit and team focus.
  • Preferred experience in higher education in a public relations role.
