Job Summary

The Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP) in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the University of Michigan invites applications for a one-term lecturer position for the 2018 summer half-term. Successful candidates will teach one section of CSP 100 which will meet MWF from 2:00pm – 4:00pm.

CSP 100 is intended for first-year students and is an examination of the modern American University and the roles and expectations of the different people within it. The course will challenge students to learn about the nature and history of the modern University as well as the roles they and others play in the enterprise of higher learning. Of particular focus will be the student’s own academic and maturational development as well as the challenges faced by the University community which is defined to include students, faculty, researchers, and administrators. There are no prerequisites and the course is taught in seminar format. This is a 3 credit graded course that meets Social Science distribution.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to teach lower-division courses; must exhibit a willingness to devote extra time and effort to students outside class via additional office hours for individualized instruction (conferences); must provide students with regular performance feedback, devote some time to teaching critical thinking and writing workshops in the classroom and provide students with weekly in-class and out of class writing assignments.

Applicants for this position are also expected to interact with and provide feedback to CSP Academic Advisors regarding student academic progress (or lack thereof) throughout the term. Teaching qualifications, teaching experience and evidence of outstanding teaching will determine the selection of the candidate.

Required Qualifications*

Ph.D. completed or in progress, experience as lecturer or GSI; demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching highly desired; 3 years of experience teaching at the college level.

The Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP) is an academic unit within the College of Literature, Science and the Arts that offers a variety of academic support services—including the Summer Bridge Program—academic year course instruction, academic advising and peer advising, tutoring, and freshman interest groups. CSP works closely with a wide variety of academic departments, offices and programs throughout the university, including offices in the various schools and colleges, the Undergraduate Admissions Office, the Office of Financial Aid, and the Division of Student Affairs.
