Course Description

HON 240: The Games We Play

Course description: As part of the Honors Core Curriculum, this course introduces Honors students to the fields, questions, and methodologies of the social sciences. The course introduces students to the social sciences through the concept of games, including

• the problems of social cooperation, conflict, and competition;
• human motivation as well as social action and roles;
• the institutions and rules that affect motivation, action, and roles, both formal institutions such as governments, universities, or sports leagues, and informal ones, such as  gender roles, old boys’ networks, or the unwritten rules in sports.

In this course, students will learn social science by doing social science. They will observe, interpret, and analyze behavior, texts, even their own lives and experiences. The course does not presuppose any prior training or inclination in any particular methods of inquiry, but students will get an exposure to some of the qualitative, quantitative and formal methods in social science. Readings will include academic work in the social sciences, as well as popular non-fiction and fiction. 

The course will include significant writing, as it satisfies the First-Year Writing requirement.


Each GSI will lead a discussion section of the larger course. Each GSI is also expected to participate in the instruction during lecture as students work with hands-on in-class activities. Regular meetings of the entire teaching team for the course will provide general guidance, lesson planning, and assignment norming. Nobody is expected to be an expert in all social-scientific methods; the primary criterion is intellectual open-mindedness. GSIs are expected to teach 1 section of this First-year Writing course for a 50% appointment (.5 FTE).

Required Qualifications*

Good standing in a Rackham program in a relevant department.

Desired Qualifications*

Candidacy in a Ph.D. program in a relevant department; experience teaching introductory courses at UM or other college or university.
