Job Summary

Dr. Benjamin Segal is seeking a Research Lab Specialist Associate to provide support for research in neuroimmunology using animal models and clinical specimens.


The successful candidate will assist with experiments in a Neuroimmunology Laboratory that conducts animal model and clinical studies.  For animal studies, tasks will include immunization of mice, purification of inflammatory cells from the central nervous system (CNS), CNS and lymph node dissection, optic nerve dissection, T cell culture and adoptive transfer, construction of bone marrow chimeric mice, hybridoma maintenance, antibody purification, RNA extraction, quantitative RT-PCR, Elispot assays, lymphoproliferative assays, flow cytometry, Luminex (multiplex bead-based) assays, intravital, invtravenous and intraperitoneal injections, astrocyte isolation and culture,  neurite outgrowth assays, retinal whole mounts, immunohistochemistry, and intracardiac perfusion.   The successful candidate will be expected to organize and catalogue data generated from experiments and assist with the preparation of figures.  He or she will be responsible for mouse colony management, including the breeding, tagging, genotyping by PCR and weaning of mice. For clinical studies, this job entails the processing of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and plasma from human subjects, and freezing and storing of PBMC.  Plasma will be analyzed via Luminex and PBMCs will be analyzed via flow cytometry, genomics and functional assays. General duties include maintaining lab equipment, training users in equipment management  and operation, training students and fellows in laboratory techniques, optimizing protocols, washing and autoclaving  glassware, monitoring lab supplies, purchasing lab supplies and mice, tracking the laboratory budget, and updating and amending UCUCA protocols. 

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor of Science degree and 1 or more years of experience.  The candidate should have experience handling mice.  He or she should have experience with immunohistochemistry, cell culture and basic molecular biology techniques. 

Desired Qualifications*

Master’s degree in related field.  Experience in flow cytometry.
