Responsibilities*

Utilities is a division of Facilities & Operations, made up of 135 dedicated employees responsible for providing utilities services for the university 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Services include campus-wide utilities purchasing, generation, and distribution, as well as metering and billing energy consumption for all university buildings. Distribution includes the operations and maintenance of 300 miles of underground utility systems from outdoor lighting and high voltage circuits to water mains to tunnel piping. The division also provides a wide range of engineering services primarily dedicated to energy management, the operations and maintenance of university facilities, and the utilities infrastructure.

Powerhouse Maintenance Repairperson II responsibilities:

  • Maintain boilers, turbines, air compressors, cooling towers, fans and related equipment through preventive maintenance such as fitting and adjusting bearings, packing or lubrication.
  • Inspect all Power Plant equipment for defects or wear, and determine whether repair, replacement or maintenance is necessary for proper operation.
  • Balance, set and align Power Plant equipment and check tightness, alignments and settings to prevent defects or wear using laser alignment and vibration monitoring tools.
  • Repair, maintain or replace electrical motors, pumps, heat exchangers, valves and all other components of turbines, boilers, cooling towers, fans and other associated Power Plant equipment.
  • Dismantle and repair boiler, turbine, air compressor or other equipment using cranes, cables, slings, rope-falls, riggings, scaffolding, booms, block and tackle and any other apparatus for moving heavy objects.
  • Enter data into a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • May coordinate work of Powerhouse Maintenance Repairperson Designees or other assigned assistants.
  • Work independently or in a team of other Maintenance Repairpersons and/or other Skilled Trades Repairpersons to trouble-shoot and repair equipment.
  • Perform other assigned job functions as designated by Supervisor.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school, GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4-year mechanical apprenticeship or 2-year associate degree from an accredited mechanical trades school, plus minimum of four (4) years of associated mechanical work experience (i.e. Military Training, Technical Training, Mechanical Service Technician including 8,000 hours of documented mechanical experience from previous job or employers). 
  • Satisfactory and reliable performance as an E3 Powerhouse Maintenance Repairperson Designee is an acceptable alternative to the experience described above.
  • Considerable experience in rotating equipment or power plant equipment maintenance.
  • Must be able to perform the full range of duties, with or without a reasonable accommodation, in the classification in an environment that has high levels of heat and noise.
  • Considerable mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to interpret relevant blue prints, diagrams, sketches and specifications.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook or Google email systems.
  • Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Considerable knowledge of Safety Standards and Procedures.
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with co-workers, staff, and members of management.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the International Union of Operating Engineers, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
