Job Summary

This is a nursing supervisor position that has a primary function to coordinate and/or manage the daily OR schedule in a large, Level 1 Trauma, multi-service OR.
Coordinate and optimize patient flow across the OR/PACU of University Hospital to promote quality, safe patient care with appropriate nursing and support staff.  Serve as liaison for clinical and operational issues surrounding patient placement in partnership with Anesthesia, Surgical, and Nursing staff.  Provide ongoing monitoring of the trauma call system and remain readily available to receive Level 1 and 2 trauma patients.  Collaborate with ancillary services and disciplines to eliminate barriers to timely transfers and receipt of patients. Act as a liaison between the OR/PACU department and patients and families.  Provide direct supervision to nursing and ancillary staff members assigned. Coordinate Operating Room management, preparedness and cleanliness for first start cases.


Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
Provide effective communication with team members and other departments to ensure seamless process. 
Provide accurate and timely follow-up with staff, patients and families. 
Round in the OR areas to gather and report real time activity.  
Collaborate with nursing and medical staff to assess levels of care required for current patients.
Provide ongoing assessment and communication of Operating Room availability and changes in patient status. 
Assess patient volumes and workload intensity in all areas for coordination and appropriate patient placement.  
Partner with Anesthesia to identify and problem-solve patient placement barriers to expedite Operating Room availability. 
Serve as a resource regarding institutional and departmental policies and procedures. 
Board all add-on/trauma/urgent cases 
Coordinate communication hand-off to PM Charge Nurse/Supervisor
Coordinate and implement clinical nursing practice based on UMHS Policies and AORN Standards.
Coordinate report to OR Supervisors daily at 655 AM
Provide report to Pre-op/PACU at 0830 AM
Coordinate with anesthesia the next day’s schedule at 11 AM


Educate and provide feedback to nursing and medical staff in the OR/PACU department to improve patient placement and room management. 
Support the education mission by precepting nursing orientees as appropriate. 
Manage, supervise, and coordinate nursing and assistive staff for UH Operating Rooms:

Registered Nurses
Surgical Technologists
Laser Technicians
Robotic Technicians
PeriOperative Technicians
Instrument Room Coordinator (RN)

Required Qualifications*

Required Educational Requirements:
Applicant must meet one of the following:
* Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR
* Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing.

Five (5) or more years of recent Operating Room clinical nursing experience
Demonstrated experience with in-patient Operating Room nursing 
Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to perform as role model to nursing staff 
Strong analytical, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills 
Excellent interpersonal skills 
Ability to deal with a diverse group of people in a diplomatic and effective manner

Previous experience with OR patient coordination and placement

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours/week
