Job Summary

Front desk staff for Dental Faculty Associates (DFA) clinic. Serve as an integral member of the DFA front desk team, to meet and exceed customer service expectations. Create a positive impression of the University of Michigan Dental Faculty Associates and its commitment to putting patients first with excellent customer service and phone skills. The person in this role will be working collaboratively with members of DFA, the School of Dentistry, Clinic Billing Office (CBO), hospitals and private practices in the coordination of patient care matters. The person in this role must possess excellent communication and customer service skills, while promoting teamwork and efficiency within the clinic.


Duties include clerical support to a fast-pace dental practice; answer telephones; triage calls and messages; coordinate referrals with other departments (typical callers are referring physicians, dentists and patients). This individual must have the ability to explain information clearly to patients, dentists, students and staff regarding procedure codes and insurance inquiries. In MiDent schedule patient appointments; register patients and update all statistical, insurance and demographic patient information; establish and maintain provider schedules; collect patient payments using established guidelines; charge entry; reconcile cash collections daily according to specified clinic standards. Process file for appointment confirmation calls; maintain office supply inventory; order office supplies. Cover front desk for co-workers scheduled and unscheduled absences which at times may require working extended hours with little notice. Mentor, orient and support new staff and faculty and assist with on-the-job training. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Demonstrated excellent customer service skills and telephone etiquette. Exhibit a professional and positive image during all interactions.  Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines and work effectively with frequent interruptions in a very busy environment. Ability to work effectively with management, administration, faculty, peers, co-workers, students and patients. Experience using a computerized patient information system (i.e. MiDent, AxiUm, MiChart). Experience with patient account and billing management.  Computer experience using Microsoft office products (i.e. Word, Excel). Flexibility to cover front desk co-workers scheduled and unscheduled absences which at times may require working extended time with little notice. Excellent punctuality and attendance. Experience with mentoring and training staff.

Desired Qualifications*

Minimum of two years of experience in a fast-paced dental office. Knowledge of dental or medical terminology and coding. Knowledge of School of Dentistry and University of Michigan policies and procedures. 

Work Schedule

This is a part-time or 25 hours per week position.  However, based upon clinic needs this position will have the option of increased weekly work hours.

Work Locations

This position is located in the School of Dentistry at 1011 N University.

Additional Information

This is a part-time or 25 hours per week apt.  The prorated salary range is $20,625-$23,125
