The Metabolomics Core of the University of Michigan is seeking a Targeted Metabolomics Group Lead to manage a small group of individuals performing targeted mass spectrometry analysis and method development. Experience developing targeted assays using both liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry methods (LC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) methods on a large variety of biological matrices is required. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success with troubleshooting instrumentation and assay issues related to chromatography, mass accuracy and sensitivity, and some experience with statistical analysis of data.
Handle inquiries from potential customers about the types of assays offered by the Core, any method development needed to conduct the customer’s analysis, and/or costs and timelines for project completion
Generating reports for clients as requested and associated administrative duties
Meet with clients to explain reports and contribute to experimental research design and planning for future studies
Laboratory Support & Oversight
Supervise targeted group staff in the preparation and analysis of samples
Implement quality assurance for metabolomics studies
Conduct metabolomics studies using both liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry methods (LC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) methods.
Maintain facility instrumentation and ensure compliance with OSEH workplace safety requirements
Communicate and collaborate effectively to deliver on-time and high quality results
Work as a key member and contributor to a larger metabolomics team
Assay Analysis & Presentation of Data
Analyze mass spectra with a variety of software packages and integrate new bioinformatics tools into the data analysis pipeline
Prepare and present metabolomics results for internal/external professional audiences
Participate in the training of staff, research fellows and graduate students
Develop Standard Operating Procedures and training documents
Ph.D. in chemistry or biochemistry or equivalent life science
Expertise in HPLC, GC or UHPLC coupled to mass spectrometry including sample preparation, analysis optimization and method development
6-10 years’ experience analyzing mass spectra
