Job Summary

The Congenital Heart Center Research Manager will work with the Congenital Heart Center (CHC) Associate Director of Research and Quality and other CHC senior leadership to collaborate in leading strategic planning, oversight, coordination, monitoring, and implementation of CHC research activities, and support collaboration across the CHC with other ongoing initiatives and activities. The individual in this role will manage multiple projects and initiatives while monitoring performance with regard to established goals, and reporting status and metrics to program leadership.

CHC research activities are primarily housed within the Michigan Congenital Heart Outcomes Research and Discovery (M-CHORD) Program.  M-CHORD is a multi-disciplinary collaborative program, with dedicated research staff and diverse faculty geared toward improving outcomes and quality of care for children with heart disease.  M-CHORD collaborates with a wide variety of other research programs and investigators across the University of Michigan campus, and has broad expertise with a research portfolio spanning translational research, multi-center clinical trials, and health services/outcomes research, including both single and multicenter studies. M-CHORD also houses the data coordinating and analytic centers for a growing number of multi-center research and quality improvement collaboratives including the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium (PC4) and Cardiac Networks United.


Research Program Oversight and Coordination

  • Under general direction and in collaboration with program faculty leadership, responsible for the management, performance, and completion of multiple concurrent research projects.
  • Develop plans and strategies for the CHC research portfolio
  • Maintain a complete understanding of research conducted across the CHC
  • Work with leadership to develop and communicate research priorities and set goals
  • Partner with staff and leadership to implement large scale initiatives and projects on time and within budget, using appropriate tools
  • Monitor project timelines, and work with leadership to institute corrective action when needed by utilizing established quantitative and qualitative measures
  • Support communication within the CHC research enterprise, across other CHC and University initiatives, and with investigators at other institutions, providing a single point of contact for program and projects.
  • Work with database staff to track and report academic output of research projects
  • Support collaboration, integration, and efficiencies across research efforts
  • Communicate information regarding the CHC research portfolio, outcomes, and needs, to both internal and external audiences
  • In collaboration with research leadership and CHC finance personnel, assist in preparing research budgets, analyze variances and performance to plan, and initiates corrective actions as necessary

Research Project Management

  • Partner with leadership and staff to develop and implement major initiatives including: grant writing and submission, protocol and budget development, contracting, communication with internal and external partners, and data collection processes
  • Monitor major project timelines and budget
  • Work with investigators, Department of Pediatrics Research Office, and others to streamline and implement contracting and other procedures related to study start up
  • Identify causes for research related problems and work with teams to implement corrective action
  • Work with research teams and leadership to develop and implement strategies to optimize data quality, data security, and regulatory compliance 
  • Assist with preparation of manuscripts and presentation
  •  Compile internal and external research reports and documents

Staff Management / Human Resources / Training

  • Collaborate with leadership to provide oversight for research staff including monitoring and distributing workload
  • Promote principles of collaboration, prioritization and team accountability
  • Work with existing administrative and HR leadership to organize and conduct performance reviews, recruitment, hiring, timekeeping activities
  • Conduct research process and protocol related training for staff and investigators internally and at other institutions as applicable


Research Event Coordination

  • In collaboration with CHC event planning and administrative staff, lead and coordinate implementation of research events including conferences, CME events, visiting lecturers, and other research-related events
  • Serve as a lead point of contact and program representative with external stakeholds during research event planning and implementation.


  • Travel up to 5% related to multi-center projects and initiatives and/or occasional attendance at evening or weekend research events may be required

Required Qualifications*


  • Bachelor's degree in biological, social, or medical sciences, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • A minimum of 4 years project management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration and communications skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, pay close attention to detail, follow-through with tasks, and work as part of a team with medical professionals.
  • Strong project management skills, and working knowledge of management systems.
  • Excellent attendance and strong work ethic.
  • Excellent computer skills and expertise in using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other research programs.

Desired Qualifications*


  • Master's degree in healthcare related field.
  • At least 5 years of clinical research experience
  • Experience in oversight of large multi-center research projects
  • At least 2 years of research administration, supervisory, – e.g. managing research teams, pre- or post- grant award experience, contracting, research budget development, etc.
  • SoCRA Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP), Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) Certified Clinical Research Assoicate (CCRA) or other related certification is preferred.
  • Experience in pediatric cardiology in the healthcare setting
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures related to research
  • Knowledge of medical terminology

Additional Information

Functional supervision is received from the Congenital Heart Center Associate Director of Research and Quality. Staff members in this classification are expected to work independently and regularly exercise judgment in setting priorities, resolving operational problems and the application of policies, procedures and methods, while maintaining appropriate confidentiality and team collaboration at all times. A very strong work ethic is required with appreciation for the importance of complete and accurate research data and compliance.
