Job Summary

The Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine is currently seeking an Applications Programmer/Analyst Senior. This position will be located at the School of Public Health, at the Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center (KECC), a multidisciplinary collaborative research center. Supervision will be provided by Programming/Analyst Lead and Principal Investigator. The Applications Programmer/Analyst Senior will be primarily responsible for development, maintenance, and updates of the analytical databases using SAS as the primary platform and analysis of multiple input data sources for changes in format or content as part of the database production process.  The position will also participate in all phases of the research process through publication. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position meet the criteria for exempt status.


Employee would be responsible for the development, maintenance and update of the analytical databases using SAS as the primary platform and analysis of multiple input data sources for changes in format or content as part of the database production process for several large government-sponsored projects - NIDDK's United States Renal Data System, CDC CKD Surveillance System and PCORI-Dialysafe. They will participate in all phases of research projects and will have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction.

Performs complex systems analysis and programming tasks requiring advanced techniques. Provides technical advice and consultation on difficult analysis and programming problems requiring advanced techniques. Participates in systems development and maintenance. Conducts analysis of complex data processing applications and prepares feasibility studies to evaluate user needs for new or revised systems

Analyze and explore new data sources to assess their appropriateness for project(s) needs. Design analytical files involving the integration of data from many sources. Plan and carry out modifications to the database and related software to accommodate these changes. Prepare sets of standard analysis files including Medicare, Medicaid, Clinformatics-OPTUM claims and other data sources. 

Work with the Programming/Analyst Supervisor and research analysts to determine data reporting requirements. Design new systems or modifications to existing systems to meet these needs, and assess alternative solutions. 

Prepare detailed system documentation, including data dictionary tools (in MS-Access, Excel or similar software), and users and researchers guides. Prepare and carry out detailed testing plans to verify the proper operation of the systems and to validate the data in the databases.  Participate in all phases of the research process through publication. May provide project leadership to lower level staff.

Required Qualifications*

• Master's degree in computer science, statistics, health policy, public health, social science, or a related field.
• 5-7 years systems analysis/programming experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision and guidance.
• Experience using SAS for data management and statistical analysis. 
• Proven experience developing and managing relational databases of significant size, including building table relationships and establishing documentation to ensure regular database updates.
• Experience utilizing programming documentation, testing, validation and reporting experience in a production-oriented environment.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work effectively within a team of researchers, analysts and programmers.

Desired Qualifications*

• Experience building databases from multiple data sources.
• Experience with Medicare or other insurer claims databases
• Experience analyzing data in clinical trials and clinical trials procedures. 
• Statistical training or experience, including survival analysis.
• Experience in health-system information technology.
• Experience in technical and research writing including research/grant proposals.
