Michigan Engineering produces award-winning, class-leading stories, videos and photography, presented on high-impact websites. The Front End Developer plays a key role as a member of the Communications & Marketing (C&M) creative team, helping to deliver websites and digital content that are highly engaging, usable and on the cutting edge of web functionality. Their role is integral to helping raise the quality of websites throughout Michigan Engineering.
The Front End Developer will be working with designers, writers, usability experts, project managers and stakeholders to build and deploy sites and digital experiences on a variety of CMSs (including the College's WordPress CMS), ensuring that websites function on spec. They will help elevate and maintain sites as new technologies are released and needs are identified, taking advantage of those technologies to keep Michigan Engineering sites in the lead when compared to peer institutions.
The Front End Developer will be responsible for understanding the technical and communication goals of C&M and the College of Engineering, building projects that help achieve those goals. They will work with designers and usability experts to provide expert guidance on how designs should be developed in order to create a good user experience. The Front End Developer should put a personal emphasis on keeping their skills up to date and have a passion for their craft.
This position reports to the Digital Marketing Manager.
The Office of C&M is a collaborative environment; pivotal to the success of the Front End Developer will be creating a work partnership with the back end developer - as such cursory knowledge of the PHP landscape is ideal. The Front End Developer should be comfortable working hand-in-hand with digital team members (including digital strategist, digital designer, UX/IA designer, etc.) and will be expected to contribute to the creation of technical workflows and toolsets that benefit the entire team.
The Front End Developer will design, build, deploy and maintain email templates and products for the College of Engineering and its partners. For web re/design pages, the Front End Developer should be comfortable working with a team designing, building, deploying and maintaining web pages and templates for C&M. They must be knowledgeable and adept at working within the CoE WordPress content management system, and stay abreast of changes and new developments in the fields of web design and development.
The Front End Developer must be knowledgeable of email best practices and adept at coding for different mail clients and browsers, staying abreast of changes and new developments in the email development space. They will contribute to the web group's efforts to specify, improve and implement the look, feel and function of online and digital projects, and interface directly with users, in-house web project managers, designers, editors, developers, writers and multimedia artists.
The Front End Developer will analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions within the scope of their responsibilities. Therefore, their work requires intelligence, diligence and accuracy, with the individual having leeway to develop original work products. They will not be involved in the operation, repair, or maintenance of computer hardware, networks, or equipment.
35% Under guidance and supervision, develop and implement front-end design and function for website, email and other digital projects -- developing, editing and/or removing functionality as appropriate, as well as effectively migrating content as needed.
30% Help build, deploy, and maintain web content, including text, graphics, videos, photos and other content types as appropriate.
25% Help troubleshoot issues that arise related to function and display of web content, including browser compatibility and accessibility issues, among others; this includes participating in website QA prior to launch.
10% Work with others to provide ongoing guidance on further development and maintenance to retain a high level of quality and functionality of web projects.
Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, graphic design, communications, digital media, web design, application development or other appropriate field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 3-5 years of experience in web development.

Proven ability to set and manage priorities (for self and for projects), handle multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines, and operate in a flexible, professional manner. Demonstrate ability to successfully lead and work in teams. Ability to adapt to change and thrive in an environment filled with change. Love giving and receiving thoughtful feedback, and not afraid to change your mind.
Creativity and attention to detail are critical, as many College sites have very high visibility. Sweat the details, but see the bigger picture. Able to build productive relationships with faculty, staff, students and others. Able to apply broad knowledge of principles and practices of web development, design and communications to achieve goals of C&M.

Web marketing mindset. Precision and attention to detail with an understanding of the importance of a thorough QA. Experience working in collaborative coding environments, utilizing shared tools such as GitHub. Familiarity with, passion for, or desire to acquire data visualization and/or data science skills.
