Job Summary

Michigan Engineering produces award-winning, class-leading stories, videos and photography, presented on high-impact websites. As a multimedia designer with Michigan Engineering Communications & Marketing (digital designer with some print experience), you’ll have a solid understanding of web design on a variety of digital platforms and a strong commitment to enforcing brand standards. Michigan Engineering expects digital/print designer candidates to have a thorough understanding of designing for popular CMSs, email design best practices, some familiarity with digital advertising and social graphics - and an interest in data visualization and accessibility. The majority of our projects are a combination of WordPress, Mailchimp and custom code to varying degrees so, although the multimedia designer is not required to have development skills, they must be able to “speak code.”

In addition to the primary responsibilities as a digital designer, there will be opportunities and projects in the print space. As a print designer you will be responsible for design concepts and layouts of various marketing collateral and print materials. You will not only create cutting-edge design, but ensure all materials adhere to brand standards. While working on print projects, designer will be responsible for communicating with in-office stakeholders, as well as outside vendors and on-campus partners.


Paramount to this position is a commitment to collaboration and teamwork. We expect you to make your voice heard and to actively participate in the creative process. You will be collaborating with our team of designers, multimedia producers, developers, content writers, and project managers, and will be expected to take the personal initiative to complete projects with minimal supervision. You must exhibit strong organization and time management skills, with a desire to learn and always be advancing your skillset.


This position reports to the Senior Creative Design Lead.


Position Functions and Duties

  • Design digital and print material - including, but not limited to, email, websites, mailers, brochures, landing pages, social graphics, display pieces, etc.

  • Collaborate with the digital/print creative team, and production team to ensure all designs and development are on-brand

  • Work closely with digital and creative teams to deliver new integrated marketing experiences

  • Provide existing web property maintenance and updates

  • Facilitate seamless transitions and communication between design, development and production project stages

  • Participate in partner meetings to ascertain requests, revisions, conceptions, and then translate into tangible design and development tasks for collaboration with team members.

  • Adroitly design for complex web properties that are fast-loading, easy to navigate, cross-browser compatible, mobile friendly, accessible, simple, intuitive and meet partners’ needs


Job Functions:

  • 70% Digital

    • Under guidance from the senior creative design lead, maintain and create digital platforms (websites, social graphics, emails, landing pages) that employ digital design best practices promote positive user experience on a variety of screens

    • Stay up-to-date on cutting-edge digital design trends

    • Work within the Communications and Marketing team and with embedded communicators to ensure consistency of online branding and messaging.

    • Work with the UX designer(s) to iteratively shape and evolve web properties to ensure their impact on the users is consistent with the college’s overall strategy.

    • Work with the college developers to refine design, interactions, and user experience.

    • Work with front-end developer and UX designer to create best-in-class emails, websites, landing pages and social graphics.

    • Explain and be an advocate for user-centered design processes, user experience, and principles in a clear and concise manner.

    • Interact with stakeholders throughout all phases of discovery, design, and development.

    • In some cases, it will be necessary to think about how an asset can be used, or altered, for both print and digital media to create integrated marketing experiences for our target audience.

  • 20% Print

    • With creative direction from senior creative design lead, and in collaboration with other print counterparts, create original design layouts for print materials, including marketing collateral, posters, flyers, brochures, etc.

    • Design original pieces, graphics and infographics

    • Refine images, fonts and layouts

    • Maintain brand consistency throughout all our projects

    • Present design concept/layout to senior creative design lead

    • Incorporate changes recommended by senior creative design lead/partners

    • Preparing final Indesign files for production

  • 10% Administrative/Project Management

    • Ensure seamless handoff on digital projects from design phase to development

    • Present design concepts to external stakeholders

    • Attend/present at communications workshops pertaining to design

    • Coordinate relationship with vendors; preparing specifications and obtaining estimates for final approval

    • Archive all final projects using office’s guideline on server

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, graphic design, communications, digital media, web design, application design or other appropriate field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 3-5 years of experience in web and print design.

Our ideal applicant will be an expert in designing for responsive, cross-platform digital experiences and Adobe Design Suite. Applicants should have experience using prototyping tools (e.g. Marvel app, InVision, Adobe XD) and an extensive portfolio to support experience and skills with an emphasis in branding, and marketing collateral.


Each applicant should have excellent communication skills with non-technical, technical co-workers, as well as external stakeholders. Proven ability to set and manage priorities (for self and for projects), handle multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines, and operate in a flexible, professional manner. Demonstrate ability to successfully lead and work in teams. Ability to adapt to change and thrive in an environment filled with change. Love giving and receiving thoughtful feedback, and not afraid to change your mind.


Highly proficient in all design aspects and familiar with UX/UI best practices and theory. Your creativity, attention to detail are critical, as many College sites have very high visibility. You have an excellent understanding of current web accessibility best practices, sweat the details, but see the bigger picture. With your customer service-minded approach you will build productive relationships with faculty, staff, and students. Able to apply broad knowledge of principles and practices of web development, design and communications to achieve goals of C&M.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with front-end technologies and modern web frameworks (i.e., Foundation, CSS, HTML, Javascript)

  • Passion for, or desire to learn, data visualization

  • Self-starter who ensures our team stays on top of all the current digital design trends and best practices

  • Familiarity with Sketch or similar tools

  • Motion graphics and animation interest/capability (e.g. After Effects or similar tool)
