Job Summary

The Human Factors group of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) is seeking up to two outstanding Post-Doctoral Research Fellows for a one-year, renewable appointment. This opportunity can provide you experiences of working on exciting connected and automated vehicle technology related projects, while working with a group of experts in this domain, and helping you to build up your future.

The Human Factors Group studies the interactions of the driver, the vehicle, and the environment. The underlying rationale for research in this division is that well-designed vehicles and driving environments make the driving task safer, easier, more efficient, and more enjoyable. Research conducted by the Human Factors group ranges from basic to translational in purpose, individual to policy in focus, experimental to simulation in design, utilizing a breadth of research methods, including surveys, qualitative and quantitative data collection, driving simulation and instrumented vehicles using state-of-the-art technologies.

The post-doctoral research associate will conduct driving safety research in close collaboration with research scientists and faculty in UMTRI. Duties will include conducting original and collaborative research, publishing in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, participating in seminars and work groups, and collaborating on research grant applications. The successful candidate will: 1) author and co-author peer-reviewed publications and presentations at professional meetings; 2) collaborate in ongoing research and new research proposals with faculty; and, 3) help supervise and train undergraduate and graduate students. Desirable characteristics include: strong collaborative aptitude, excellent written and oral communication abilities, and excellent quantitative and analytical skills.  

Required Qualifications*

The successful applicants will have a doctoral degree in industrial engineering, transportation engineering, psychology, human factors, or a related field. The candidates will have a demonstrated record of individual initiative and originality in research, strong analytic skills, familiar of a statistical package such as R, SAS, or MatLab, and the potential to become an independent academic researcher within two to three years.
