Job Summary

The Stamps School of Art & Design seeks an Admissions Counselor who will work with prospective undergraduate students and represent the School at recruitment events across the country, including National Portfolio Day events and high school visits. This person should be someone who is excited to recruit for a unique undergraduate art/design curriculum found at one of the top public universities in the country. Specific duties include:

Responsibilities*

  • Serve as primary contact for prospective students and their families. Counsel students, conduct portfolio reviews, and provide follow-up to students and their families during all phases of the admissions cycle by email, Google Hangouts, phone, or in-person meetings.
  • Represent Stamps School of Art & Design at National Portfolio Day events, college fairs, transfer fairs, high school visits, receptions, and other outreach programs. Weekend work and travel is required throughout the fall and winter.
  • Deliver in-depth presentations about the School’s undergraduate programs, UM policies, and admissions requirements and deadlines, to prospective students, families, teachers and counselors, in groups or individually.
  • Evaluate prospective student portfolios and provide students with constructive feedback.
  • Review applications and provide recommendations to the School’s admissions committee.
  • Responsible for specific projects such as open houses and other outreach events for prospective students, admitted students, art teachers, and other populations of interest to the School.
  • Work on yielding admitted students through personal contact and follow up, programming, and identifying students’ needs.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with high school art teachers and counselors, after school art programs coordinators and instructors, and other professionals.
  • Maintain prospective student records in CRM, tracking contact points and outreach, and following up with students through various modes of communication.
  • Help develop outreach strategies and initiatives to engage prospective and admitted students, including but not limited to print materials, social media and web content.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret prospective student data for use in recruitment and admissions decision-making, analysis, and performance monitoring.
  • Provide comprehensive schedule of recruitment activities and events, including detailed travel itinerary and budget information; and submit weekly travel and expense, high school visit and event reports.
  • Perform other related duties or special projects and participate in university committees as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in art, design or comparable discipline that provides a solid background in visual arts. Must be able to evaluate and critique prospective students’ portfolios.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. Well developed interpersonal skills and attitudes, and ability to communicate with a wide range of individuals.
  • Strong work ethic, a high level of professionalism, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work well in group/office setting as well as independently
  • Must be free to travel extensively in and out of state, and work evenings and weekends.
  • Familiarity with basic Macintosh computer software applications.
  • Must be able to move and transport 20-30 lbs. of promotional materials over short distances.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in Art & Design, Higher Education, or related field
  • Recruitment/Admissions experience in higher education
  • Familiarity with the curriculum and aim of the program
  • Knowledge of other art & design programs
  • Understanding of Customer Relations Management systems
  • Experience with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds
  • Familiarity with current art & design practices, trends and art history

Additional Information

  • The salary range for this position is $38,000 - $40,000.
  • Hours: 40.00, with extensive travel, including evening and weekend hours
