Job Summary

We are seeking a Collection Interviewer to join our Student Loan Collections team in Financial Operations.  This position is one of 15 team members responsible for the collection of student loan debt and outstanding student account balances through telephone, emails, letters, and personal contact. 


  • Collect student loan and student account outstanding balances by telephoning appropriate parties, sending written communications via email or letter, or personal contact with walk-in customers. 
  • Obtain missing information such as borrower addresses and telephone numbers by searching relevant university databases or by skip tracing.
  • Follow federal guidelines for due diligence steps such as making appropriate telephone calls, sending email communications, pre-acceleration letters, and/or acceleration letters. 
  • Analyze pre-agency reports for possible agency placements or write-off of account balances; submit accounts to collection agencies, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate discretion and judgment in interpretation of rules and regulations regarding federal loans and laws governing collection of student debt. 
  • Counsel borrowers, and their representatives of their rights and responsibilities on their loans and other debt. 
  • Determine deferment and cancellation eligibility and assist borrowers in obtaining these loan benefits.
  • Handle disputes concerning student loans or student debts, diffuse volatile situations and proactively seek solutions in a professional manner.
  • Stay abreast of trends, regulations, and developments that may improve ability to perform job functions through newsletters, conferences, and interaction with other collection staff. 

Required Qualifications*

  • Completion of high school education, with college degree preferred
  • Two or more years’ experience collecting student debt, including knowledge of FERPA, the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the rules regarding Personal Identifiable Information. 
  • Must be a team player
  • Proven customer service skills with a strong customer focus
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive work environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism during difficult conversations
  • Working knowledge of PCs and desktop software, preferably Microsoft Office Suite and Google Gmail

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of federal laws that apply to Student Loan collections.
  • Experience with ECSI student loan servicing software
  • Experience with Student Accounting Systems (Oracle PeopleSoft helpful)
