Job Summary

DESCRIPTION

The field educator position in the School of Social Work, Office of Field Instruction is a complex and rigorous one that requires candidates to demonstrate a student-centered professional focus, a strong commitment to social work education, field training, and social work values and ethics. Candidates must have professional experience collaborating in a team environment and demonstrate a strong work ethic. Candidates must be licensed in the State of Michigan (LMSW) and have a minimum of 5 years LMSW experience working in a professional capacity that has adequately prepared them to meet the requirements and demands of the position. 

Responsibilities*

DUTIES

The position has the following required attributes:

  1. Responsible for assessment, evaluation, and advising regarding student goals and needs related to field education.
  2. Consistently meet with students and field instructors in a timely manner to provide individualized support, guidance and advising throughout the field education experience.
  3. Identify, develop, and participates in student and field instructor orientation, and ongoing training and educational activities related to the field education curriculum.
  4. Responsible for negotiation, problem solving, dispute resolution, and intervention with students, faculty academic advisors, and fieldwork sites regarding field education issues and concerns.
  5. Travel to fieldwork sites to monitor compliance with CSWE accreditation standards, professional practice and ethical standards, evaluate student progress with regard to field education course requirements, and assign student grades (SW515 and SW691). 
  6. Teach the field seminar course (SW531), effectively evaluate student performance, and assign student grades.
  7. Possess updated technological skills and has proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google e-mail and has demonstrated proficiency in database management.
  8. Maintains all School related records in a comprehensive manner utilizing existing systems effectively and efficiently.
  9. Contributes to the Field Office team by actively participating in all required meetings, helping to set priorities, program direction/evaluation, and division of responsibilities.
  10. Handles all aspects of work in a professional, sensitive, and confidential manner, which respects students, faculty and fieldwork site personnel.
  11. Represent the field instruction program on behalf of the School to agencies and other professional groups while participating in identifying, developing, approving, and evaluating new fieldwork sites.
  12. Be knowledgeable of, evaluates, and implements University and School policies related to social work education with particular focus on field instruction.
  13. Collaborate with faculty on identifying and implementing best practices related to the field education curriculum and correctly interprets field instruction policies and procedures with students, faculty, and fieldwork site personnel.
  14. Be active in School wide/University related professional activities representing the Office of Field Instruction (committees, work groups, School projects, student functions, etc.) promoting best practices in social work research, field practices while promotes student professional development.
  15. Exhibits the ability to collaborate closely on a daily basis with a professional team exhibiting a positive solution-focused, strengths-based approach.
  16. Consistently demonstrates initiative and motivation when approaching tasks, is willing and eager to take on increased responsibility, and is capable of generating creative ideas.
  17. Demonstrate excellent time management skills.
  18. Actively and positively participates in performing all duties by demonstrating cooperation and dependability.
  19. Be flexible and open about working outside key areas of responsibility.
  20. Accepts and be responsible for all other work assigned by the Assistant Dean and Director of Field Instruction or other School Administrators.
  21. Demonstrates knowledge, skills and vision in promoting and advancing the Schools’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan.

Required Qualifications*

  • MSW degree from a CSWE accredited program
  • Licensed at the LMSW level for 5+ years
  • Five (5) + years post-masters professional social work experience.
  • Three (3) + years training MSW and/or BSW students

Desired Qualifications*

  • Possess superior professional judgment and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Possess current and relevant technology-based skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, manage multiple demands and prioritize work effectively.
  • Preferred professional experience in a field education program.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
