Job Summary

The Integrative Systems and Design (ISD) is a division of the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. The College of Engineering is committed to the academic excellence of its student body. ISD places a special emphasis on the ability of graduates to be exceptional leaders who are able to think transformatively and to make value in society through their greater skills in integrative systems thinking, leadership of interdisciplinary teams, and their ability to design and innovate new products, systems, and services. Our faculty members are steeped in research and practice. They design and teach programs at the dynamic intersection of new knowledge domains using action-based learning. Focusing on innovation, creativity, user-centered design, business sense and holistic systems thinking, ISD is addressing the critical need for skilled practitioners capable of integrating and applying knowledge from different disciplines in the design of products and complex engineered systems.

ISD is seeking an Intermittent Lecturer to develop and deliver a Software Systems Engineering course. The course focuses on systems engineering systems in which software is a major component. The course covers software engineering principles, artifacts and approaches for the development of software systems.   Topics include:

  • Software engineering processes and metrics

  • Real-time, distributed, configurable and object-oriented software

  • Alignment of software systems with overall systems design

  • Software-unique aspects of planning, requirements, architecture analysis, design, implementation, testing and maintenance

  • Understanding important software engineering constraints (performance, security, networking etc.)

  • Agile framework for software design

  • Technology trends in software systems engineering

Student teams will conduct case studies for a project


Responsibilities of the LEO Intermittent Lecturer include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop an 8 to 14 week course on Software Systems Engineering

  • Deliver this course at U of M, North campus, Chrysler building during Fall or Winter terms

Required Qualifications*

  • MS required in relevant field

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience

  • Strong background in software engineering

  • Extensive experience in systems engineering

Desired Qualifications*

  • PhD in relevant field

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience

Work Schedule

ISD offers flexibility for this course in the evening to help accommodate those that work during the day.
