Job Summary

The Residency Classification Office in the Registrar’s Office is seeking a highly motivated Customer Service Assistant to support the efforts of the residency classification team and to provide assistance and guidance to students, families, staff and faculty requiring assistance navigating the in-state tuition application process.  The assistant will work in a team environment performing a broad range of administrative duties as well as customer support for both internal and external constituents.


Provides exceptional communication and customer service managing large volume of phone and email inquiries as a primary contact to the Residency Classification Department. Provides assistance to students and families with inquiries regarding the university’s Guidelines for Qualifying for In-State Tuition and the in-state tuition application process. Documents information and updates files.

Supports Residency Office team through document management, letter production, data entry and other administrative tasks as necessary. May assist with process improvement tasks.

Required Qualifications*

  • Associates Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considerable experience in customer service including working with diverse groups
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and to collaborative problem solving as integral team member 
  • Ability to adhere to departmental and organizational policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity. Experience with students and work environments of a diverse background is preferred.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of the academic operations at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
  • Knowledge of the academic operations at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
  • Experience with LEAN or other process improvement initiatives
  • Experience and/or familiarity with PeopleSoft/Oracle preferred
