Job Summary




The Department of Social Sciences has a position available for a student office assistant.  The student office assistant provides general and clerical support for faculty and staff in the department as well as reception duties for the office.  This position entails an estimated 15-20 hours per week.  Please attach a resume when applying for this position.   

The position requires good attendance, punctuality, flexibility and the initiative to suggest and implement office organization and filing system improvements.






  • Greet faculty, staff, students, and other visitors that come into the office
  • Answer, screen, and direct telephone calls from faculty, staff, students, and the public
  • Respond to requests from faculty and staff for copying, scanning, and typing
  • Sort and distribute incoming mail
  • Prepare outgoing mail
  • Monitor supply inventory for mailroom and office
  • Update department calendar
  • File and shred documents as requested
  • Assist with meetings and hosting events, including set-up and clean-up
  • Short-term research projects, as needed, to assist the Department Chair, faculty, and staff with program management and development
  • Update databases, spreadsheets, the Department's Google site, and departmental M+Box folders, as requested
  • Assist department personnel in developing and maintaining a social media presence
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*



  • Current UM-Dearborn student
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software programs
  • Ability to quickly learn standard software applications
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with faculty, staff, students, and the public
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work

Desired Qualifications*



  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel and Google applications
  • Ability to construct databases, queries, and reports in Microsoft Access
  • Adept at utilizing social media applications for marketing and promotional purposes
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
