Job Summary

The Department of Social Sciences (SSCI) has a part-time, temporary position available for a marketing and social media coordinator (MSM Coordinator). The MSM Coordinator will assist departmental staff and faculty with developing, implementing, and maintaining marketing and social media efforts pertaining to SSCI academic programs.


This position entails an estimated 15-20 hours per week for an estimated 4 months.  The MSM Coordinator will implement strategies already developed by the Department, develop additional strategies, and craft protocols to enable departmental personnel to maintain the strategies after this temporary position expires.




Social Media:  In cooperation with departmental staff, oversee the creation and maintenance of a social media presence for the Department utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and/or other social media platforms. Provide strategic guidance on social media platforms and best practices.  Partner with department staff and faculty on acquiring/developing content for these feeds. Develop a protocol for departmental staff to follow for on-going maintenance of an active social media presence.

Website: In cooperation with departmental staff, participate in the enhancement and maintenance of the departments’ webpages using Drupal.  Oversee and manage regular and timely updates of website pages. Develop a protocol for departmental staff to follow for on-going maintenance and updating of webpages.  Work directly with department faculty and staff to obtain or develop copy for webpages.  Generate content for News and other relevant sections of the pages.  Such content might include interviews of faculty or students, creating faculty research profiles, or reporting on grants or awards received by faculty.

Newsletters:  Work with faculty and departmental personnel and the college’s communications staff to create, coordinate, and disseminate electronic and print newsletters for the Department’s academic programs.  Photograph, or arrange for the photography of, events, classes, and individuals for departmental publicity.  Maintain a digital archive of all images for each unit and its respective events/programming. Work directly with department faculty and staff to obtain or develop copy for the newsletters.  Develop a protocol for use by departmental staff and faculty for on-going production of newsletters and related publicity materials.

Course Promotion/Marketing: In cooperation with departmental staff, implement existing plans for promotion/marketing of courses to students. Develop and implement new strategies for promoting courses.  Develop a protocol for use by departmental staff to maintain course promotion efforts.


Program Promotion/Outreach: In cooperation with departmental faculty, develop strategies to coordinate the previously mentioned practices with additional activities (e.g., events, alumni functions, etc.), as appropriate, to broaden the visibility of the Department’s academic programs to existing students, future students, and alumni.  Develop a protocol for use by departmental faculty and staff to actively maintain the promotion/outreach efforts.


Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma and some years of college, plus 2 years of work experience
  • Experience with publishing, communication, and collaborative software tools, such as Microsoft PublisherAdobe Creative Cloud suite, the , Emma, Wordpress, Google suite of tools, etc.
  • A high degree of familiarity and experience with social media platforms, tools, and best practices.
  • Experience and comfort with basic software programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database management
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and an ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to quickly learn standard software applications
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with faculty, staff, students, and the public
  • Demonstrated commitment to high quality customer service and high levels of productivity.


Desired Qualifications*

  • Undergraduate degree
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Experience using Drupal content management software
  • Familiarity with emerging web technologies and their applications in an academic setting and an ability to educate others on these technologies and their applications
  • Ability to shoot and/or edit video
  • Knowledge of, and experience using, marketing analytics to assess and optimize marketing strategies
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of experience in digital marketing
  • Experience managing email, web and social media campaigns
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the creative process with a strategic web-marketing mindset
  • Proven ability to manage many tasks concurrently, continually setting priorities on emerging requirements and changing timelines
