Job Summary

The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan (AAUM) is seeking a Development Writer to join the Marketing & Communications Team that is an integral part of the AAUM’s strategic transformation plan.  The team is focused on development and planning of marketing and communications strategies that build successful multimedia campaigns for various AAUM programs, products, and services, as well as the overall brand. In addition to the responsibilities and qualifications listed below and most importantly, candidates must share and hold to the highest regard, the same values that are uniquely inherent to AAUM:

Responsible for partnering with the development team to research and execute creative, donor-centered communications through the written word that are on-brand, strategically sound, and market-driven, including stewardship reports; fundraising and membership appeals; and other materials for donors and members of the Alumni Association.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the creative and development teams to conceptualize a wide range of communications that support fundraising efforts, including impact reports, endowment reports, donor, staff, student, member, and alumni profiles, appeals, and other projects as assigned.
  • Ability to conduct interviews for projects as required and collaborate with individuals both internally and externally.
  • Produce a portfolio of high-end written creative assets that can be used in various channels including direct mail, email, website, video, print, display, newsletters, magazine content, social media,and presentations.
  • Work collaboratively with an art director partner to conceptualize/execute materials that are on-brand/on-strategy as directed by the Creative Brief.
  • Take initiative and contribute enthusiastically to the creative process.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail with an eye for concise, persuasive, clear communications.
  • Follow Development industry best practices in acknowledging donor generosity and demonstrating impact, assess new technologies, standards and trends, and assist in strategy formulation for the most effective message delivery.
  • Make an ongoing commitment to improving writing skills and staying informed of fundraising best practices and innovative trends.
  • Must “own” a project; put your “all” into it and be responsible for understanding its purpose, meeting deadlines, and executing it within the agreed upon parameters.
  • Provide organizational leadership by demonstrating AAUM core values: All In, Serving Heart and Solution Seeker, and helping other staff members demonstrate those values.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support Alumni Association and marketing team vision.
  • Work collaboratively with development team and others outside of the Marketing & Communications Department.
  • Remain current with respect to technology, trends, and what other alumni associations are doing.
  • Participate on Alumni Association and other University committees as required.
  • Provide staff support to the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, its committees and other volunteers.
  • Attend appropriate team and staff meetings.
  • Staff team and Alumni Association events.
  • Represent Alumni Association at University and alumni functions.

Supervision Received:

Direct supervision is received from VP Marketing & Communications. Functional supervision is received from the Marketing Manager and the Associate Director of Annual Giving & Stewardship

Supervision Exercised:

May coordinate the work of some freelance staff.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or other relevant field.
  • Three to five years of professional experience in persuasive and/or digital writing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of donor communications, including stewarding donors, and soliciting annual gifts and/or memberships.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills. Ability to adapt writing styles to fit the audience and voice of the piece.
  • Demonstrate interest in learning new technologies and approaches to projects.
  • Work collaboratively with development partners, and with creative team to transform strategies and topics into engaging creative content.
  • Demonstrate ability to organize, coordinate, and prioritize the work at hand to meet deadlines.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Microsoft Word suite, Google product suite, SEO optimization experience.
  • Able to run with an idea across many mediums and see it through to completion.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people on- and off-campus and effectively gather information by means of interviews, database research, etc.
  • Able to carry over learnings from one project to another.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

Additional Information

  • This position may require some evening and weekend work.
  • This is a two year, term-limited position.
