Under the direction of the Director of Campus Animal Resources of the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) and Attending Veterinarian, aids in decisions and implementation of the following roles and functions for the Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP).
Operations Management – 60%
- Develops and implements standards of care for all animal care units University wide including all campuses.
- Member of the ULAM management team that oversees the unit activities and functions
- Partners with ULAM Leadership to oversee and manage the Husbandry budget.
- Manages the administrative and operational activities of a comprehensive animal husbandry program that provides services to faculty and staff engaged in animal research, including supervision of staff.
- Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree.
- Develops operational management methods for husbandry supervisor team, sets standards for performance management
- Provides direction for the day to day activities conducted by the husbandry care unit and overall effort of 150+ FTE’s
- Duties include interviewing, selecting and training of employees; setting and adjusting their rates of pay and hours of work; planning and directing their work; appraising their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handling their complaints and grievances and disciplining them when necessary. Management responsibilities include the authority to hire, fire, or promote assigned employees or make recommendations that are given particular weight.
Internal & External Customer Support – 25%
- Foster relationships with each of the animal care units/PI’s/departments to ensure appropriate communication of all regulatory expectations.
- Liaise with stakeholders to identify and implement opportunities for partnership to remove impediments to and increase efficiencies and impact of animal care and use program.
Strategic Planning - 10%
- Participate in the Animal Care and Use Program leadership team that develops strategy, organization and administrative policies and initiatives for animal care in research, testing, and teaching.
- Participates in the ULAM Leadership team that sets the direction and process for how ULAM sets expectations and manages the business, husbandry care, clinical support, and support services of ULAM.
- In coordination with the ULAM leadership team, develops and implements long-range strategic plans and formulate budget proposals for animal facility renovation and construction, and purchase of major equipment, ensuring optimum resource utilization for space, equipment, and supplies
ULAM Space Management – 5%
- Works with other ULAM Leadership on strategies for efficient use of space inside vivariums
- Develops principals to ensure that work being done with animals is done in appropriate space through partnership with the Animal Care and Use Office
The primary duty of employees in this classification is the management of a customarily recognized department or subdivision, including the supervision of three or more full-time equivalent employees every week. Direction is over a permanent status-continuing function, not a collection of employees assigned to complete a project. Management Employees have impact on budgeting, controlling costs, planning, scheduling, and procedural change. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position meet the criteria for exempt status.
- A Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences or related field
- AALAS certification at the Technologist level or equivalent in experience
- Ten years or more experience in management or supervision of a large multi-species laboratory animal facility.
- Experience with Association for the Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) process, or in the development of materials for the accreditation process.
- Certified Manager of Animal Resources and/or Institute for Laboratory Animal Magagement
