Job Summary

The Departments of Astronomy and Statistics at the University of Michigan are looking for a Communications Coordinator who can provide high-quality content, maintenance and oversight of the Department’s websites and social media presence.

The selected candidate will work with department leadership to develop and implement the Department’s communication strategy. The successful candidate will have the demonstrated ability to set priorities while working on multiple projects, to maintain accuracy through repeated interruptions; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a diverse group including prospective and current students, faculty and staff. Excellent communication and customer service skills are mandatory. The candidate must be a self-starter; have excellent organizational skills; be able to set priorities and handle multiple assignments and deadlines; learn quickly; show initiative; the desire to identify opportunities for changes to processes, procedures and duties; and a willingness to assume additional responsibilities. Experience and comfort working simultaneously for multiple stakeholders. Ability to work in a fast-paced and varied academic environment.



Strategize, coordinate, compose and post online content via departmental websites, social media outlets and regularly scheduled departmental newsletters. Publish departmental, faculty and student events on the University’s event calendar, on departmental websites and on social media platforms as appropriate. Plan and produce event publicity including high quality posters, fliers and invitations.

Write and disseminate news stories and press releases, sometimes with short turnaround times. Maintain detailed records of news items, stories and featured personnel and activities. Manage the departmental websites using Adobe Experience Manager. Compile analytics/reports for departmental leadership about press and publicity at the department and individual faculty/student levels.

Capture activities and energy of a wide range of small and large-scale events through photography. Coordinate and shoot portrait photography of award winners, featuring students, faculty and others as needed. Select and prepare images for best quality presentations in print and digital media.

Event Support

Assist in the planning and implementation of a wide range of academic, student and faculty events such as conferences, workshops, speaker series, etc. Work closely with executive secretary, student services staff, and faculty to plan for catering, hosting, venue reservations, travel accommodations, audio/visual requirements and other details. Communicate event details to faculty students, staff, outside departments and guests.

Required Qualifications*

A Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 3-5 years demonstrated experience in a communications­ related role. Exceptional editorial and writing skills; strong design skills; experience with graphic design applications including lnDesign and Photoshop and maintaining websites; experience with social media; proven ability to strategically and creatively use technology to achieve departmental objectives.
