We are studying the mechanisms by which mutations in sodium channel genes result in seizures in patients with epileptic encephalopathy. More than 100 mutations have been identified in the SCN8A gene, that produce gain-of-function changes in the biophysical properties of the channel leading to neuronal hyperactivity. We are using two mouse models of patient mutations to probe mechanisms and test therapies. We generated a conditional model with patient mutation R1872W to dissect pathogenesis in different classes of neurons and at different stages of development, including the effects of somatic mutation.Projects involve assessment of molecular and behavioral effects in vivo, as well as characterization of new patient mutations. The lab currently includes six full time scientists and several undergraduates. We are seeking an individual with experience in neuroscience, enthusiasm for research, and enjoyment of teamwork and interaction with colleagues.
Carry out molecular genetics experiments including site directed mutagenesis, RNA isolation, PCR and RT_PCR and qRTPCR
Carry out genotyping and phenotyping of mutant mice with neurological abnormalities including seizures and movement disorders
Preparation of figures and manuscripts for publication
Read pertinent scientific literature; prepare and deliver oral presentations of research to lab meetings and local conferences; contribute to research strategies and scientific environment in the lab.
Bachelor’s degree in biology, genetics, biochemistry, or a related field.
- Intermediate Level: 4-5 years of experience
- Senior Level: 5-6 years of experiene.
Master’s or Doctoral degree preferred.
