About Us

Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) is responsible for the planning, design and construction of the University of Michigan's physical campus. A division of Facilities & Operations under the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, AEC's professional staff has the expertise to manage a wide range of facility improvement projects. We are committed to providing outstanding customer service and safely completing projects on time and within budget. The department is responsible for managing projects of all sizes from new buildings to additions, major renovations, alterations and cosmetic improvements. AEC uses a cross-functional team approach to managing projects. Each project team includes the members necessary to best meet the project's objectives. A project manager is assigned to lead the project through the design and construction process.


  • Develop CAD drawings and coordinate interferences.  Where applicable, act as Design Manager to coordinate work of drafters.  Under general supervision of a senior engineer, layout electrical equipment and systems, perform engineering calculations, and select electrical equipment.  Electrical system types include power, lighting, fire alarm, and auxiliary.
  • Perform field surveys in mechanical, electrical, and other building spaces to document existing electrical systems and to understand building interferences.  Under supervision of a senior engineer, assess condition and performance of systems and components.
  • Research and review applicable drawings and other pertinent data in the preparation of construction documents, studies, and reports.
  • Process documents for senior review.  Under supervision of a senior engineer, assist in developing project specifications, estimates, and budgets.
  • Assist in administering RFIs and CCDs and prepare punchlists.  Under supervision of a senior engineer, review and process shop drawings, and assist in resolving construction phase design issues.
  • Under direction of a senior engineer, develop standard details.  As requested by manager, participate in or lead groups and initiatives, such as CAD Support or Energy Conservation Measures.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 
  • 3 to 7 years of progressively responsible experience in the design and construction of electrical systems for commercial, educational, or research type buildings. 
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Microstation, or Revit. 
  • Knowledge of the NEC, NFPA 72, ASHRAE 90.1, and other related codes. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Candidates that have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and are pursuing their professional engineering (PE) licensure.
