We are seeking a candidate to fill the position of Clinical Research Therapist for HomeFront Strong, a grant-funded resiliency intervention program for military and veteran spouses.
HomeFront Strong is a manualized 8-week group intervention for military/veteran spouses, grounded in evidence-based strategies from cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology, and dialectical behavior therapy. The Therapist will be responsible for assessing, consenting, and enrolling participants into the program and co-leading HomeFront Strong group sessions with community providers at various sites throughout Michigan. The Therapist will also co-facilitate trainings of community providers in the HomeFront Strong model, and will provide support to community providers as they implement the intervention independently.
HomeFront Strong is one of a collection of programs dedicated to military/veteran mental health under the umbrella of M-SPAN (Military and Support Programs; www.m-span.org) in the Department of Psychiatry and Depression Center. The M-SPAN team is interdisciplinary, and includes representation from social work, psychology, psychiatry, public health, business, communication, and the military.
This position is funded by a Department of Defense grant awarded to Dr. Michelle Kees. This position will report to Jennifer Lamb, LMSW, MSCD.
Clinical Research Therapist:
Conduct participant assessments (via phone) prior to and after group participation, including preparation of assessment materials, scheduling assessments, maintaining a database to track participants, and conducting qualitative interviews with participants
Co-lead the HomeFront Strong group intervention for military/veteran spouses with a community provider at community-based sites
Prepare materials for each of the HomeFront Strong sessions, complete session checklists and study documentation, update study databases, follow all research protocols and procedures, and participate in weekly clinical supervision/coaching
Clinical Supervision and Coaching:
Serve as the on-site liaison for community groups
Assist with planning community provider trainings and co-facilitate provider trainings
Assist with coaching, supervision, and mentorship to community providers as they implement HomeFront Strong independently
Work closely with the study team on all aspects of project implementation
Complete reporting requirements necessary for grant funding and institutional regulatory approval
Maintain project databases of participant attendance and provider activity
Complete other project-related tasks as requested
Community Outreach and Recruitment
Periodically assist with recruitment of participants into HomeFront Strong by attending military/veteran-related events and presenting about the program.
The following qualifications are required for this position:
Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a similar discipline with 4-5 years of recent experience in the field
Recent experience providing therapy to patients, including as a lead or co-lead of group therapy sessions with adults
Past training and clinical experience in providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present to small and large groups
Highly organized, with strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task within deadlines
High level of professionalism, with a warm, engaging, and outgoing style
Self-starter who can work independently, and can also collaborate with a team
Fully proficient in PowerPoint, Excel and other Microsoft Office tools
The following qualifications are preferred, although not required:
Strongly prefer full licensure in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a similar discipline
Personal or professional experience with military/veteran populations
Experience providing clinical supervision to other clinicians or trainees
Experience leading or co-leading training seminars
Experience working with clinical research projects
Previous training or experience in Positive Psychology and/or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
This is a full-time position. However, strong candidates wanting less than full-time work will also be considered. Work schedule will vary, with an expectation of ~1-2 nights weekly for groups.
Primary location for this position will be at the M-SPAN offices in Ann Arbor (2025 Traverwood), with reimbursable travel throughout regions of Michigan to co-lead evening HomeFront Strong groups at community sites, co-lead full-day trainings, and to attend periodic outreach events.
