Job Summary

The laboratory of Dr. Peng Li at the Life Sciences Institute of the University of Michigan is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to study neural control of breathing and how it fails in pathological conditions in mouse models (http://www.lsi.umich.edu/labs/peng-li-lab).

The Li lab is interested in the molecular and neural basis underlying breathing control and how it goes awry in pathological conditions with breathing abnormalities, such as sleep apnea and sudden infant death syndrome. We employ a combination of state-of-the-art approaches, including viral circuit tracing, optogenetics, chemogenetics, single cell RNAseq, and functional imaging, to dissect the heterogeneity and functions of neuronal populations in the breathing control circuit, and to identify the mechanism by which the emotional and physiological inputs are integrated to generate breathing rhythm and patterns (e.g. Li et al., Nature 2016).

 

Required Qualifications*

We are looking for highly motivated and ambitious young scientists with a doctoral degree in a biological science discipline. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research independently under the supervision of the PI. Prior mouse experience is required. Applicants with expertise in areas including but not limited to, mouse genetics and behaviors, systems neuroscience, imaging, and respiratory physiology are preferred.
