Job Summary

Position overview: Buddy-to-Buddy provides outreach, support and linkage to resources to Veterans in Michigan through trained Veteran peers. It is one of the flagship programs under the M-SPAN (Military Support Programs and Networks) umbrella. These programs are dedicated to military mental health, and are housed in the University of Michigan Depression Center.  

The Buddy-to-Buddy Outreach Coordinator is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with the 130+ Buddy-to-Buddy Veteran Volunteers who are part of the program. In this oversight role, the Outreach Coordinator is charged with working with Volunteers across the state of Michigan who attend outreach events, and maximizing Volunteer performance, motivation, satisfaction and retention through regular and effective communication; organization and deployment of resources; and ongoing training, support, and mentorship. Position includes developing community relationships and promotional opportunities, as well as volunteer management functions. These include recruiting and training volunteers for the program; contributing to the monthly program newsletter; identifying Veteran-related events throughout the state and ensuring that a volunteer is available to represent Buddy-to-Buddy; providing support to volunteers engaged in outreach activities; representing the program through speaking engagements at large Veteran related events and on panels; maintaining relationships with National Guard personnel in armories throughout the state where volunteers are placed; and tracking volunteer activity in the armories and at outreach events.

Community Outreach & Interface

  • Serves as the public face & voice of the Buddy-to-Buddy organization through attendance and participation in Veteran events, speaking engagements, panel discussions, and state-wide Veterans council leadership groups 
  • Identifies and staffs Veteran related events with Buddy-to-Buddy Volunteers
  • Networks with the VA, Veteran service organizations, National Guard, non-profits, MVAA, CMH Veteran Navigators, and Veteran Community Action Teams (VCATs) to increase awareness of the Buddy-to-Buddy program
  • Proactively engages outside organizations, to include individual units within the National Guard, to promote program awareness, recruit new volunteers and develop relationships for potential program funding.
  • Coordinates parallel Buddy-to-Buddy training program within National Guard armories
  • Reviews and responds to web-based activity logs from the volunteers
  • Coordinates drill schedules and maintains volunteer travel calendar
  • Works with National Guard Liaison’s to coordinate new volunteer introductions into units and armories, and to ensure volunteers are supporting the unit’s needs 
  • Anticipates and responds to volunteer requests
  • Allocates and deploys resources regionally to ensure events are staffed and volunteers have the materials they need to be effective in the field
  • Monitors volunteer activity to include event and drill participation/logging
  • Participate in weekly support calls

Recruitment (20%)

Assists Program Manager in creating strategic outreach and recruiting plans

Recruits new volunteer Veterans into the program; assist in interviewing and screening potential candidates

Assists Program Manager in training volunteers.

Performs other duties as requested


Administration (10%)

Ensures Volunteers have all necessary materials for Buddy-to-Buddy outreach events

Provides support to administrative staff via the 1-888 number call-in line

Assists program staff with special events

Participates in program team meetings

Performs other duties as requested

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1-3 years of experience in a comparable role
  • Excellent written/verbal skills
  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in PowerPoint, Excel and other Microsoft Office tools
  • Ability to multitask and work well under pressure
  • Willingness to travel; some weekend/evening work required

Desired Qualifications*

  • Military Service or Affiliation strongly preferred (Service Member, Reservist, Guardsman, Veteran, or Family Member)
  • Prior experience working in sales or marketing highly preferred
  • Familiarity with state of Michigan geography

Monday 10:00 am-6:00 pm
Tuesday-Friday 9:00am - 5:00 pm
Some weekend/evening work required.
