The Department of Biological Chemistry is seeking a Research Lab Specialist Intermediate/Associate. Please note that this is a one year, term-limited position, but renewal is possible, pending funding. Also, this position may be filled at a lower classification, pending the qualifications of the applicant.
Design and conduct research focused on mechanistic enzymology and rapid publications; expressing and purifying recombinant proteins; performing experiments in mechanistic enzymology.
Supervise, train and orient temporary lab staff, undergraduate and graduate student in equipment operation and laboratory techniques. Extensive knowledge of operation of lab equipment, including limitations and outcomes. Contribution to overall scientific efforts of the
laboratory by advising, consulting and assisting laboratory staff as needed.
Placement and management of lab stocks and reagents. Will be expected to provide lab management support in the form of routine laboratory maintenance (inventory-keeping, preparation of stocks and buffers, etc.), record keeping, and compliance with University of Michigan regulations. Execution of lab policies, ensuring compliance in lab safety and OSEH regulations.
Perform statistical analysis, literature searches, write-up results for publications and generate ideas for grant applications.
A Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biophysics or closely related field, with at least 4-5 years relevant research experience. Experience in making buffers, the use of analytical instruments, the in-silico analysis of protein and gene sequences. A key requirement is an eagerness and ability to learn new skills. Meticulous attention to detail, accurate and thorough record-keeping, the ability to prioritize and manage time are crucial skills for this position. Other requirements include excellent oral and written communication skills in English, effective judgment and problem solving and a willingness to work within a group. A successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to efficiently multi-task, and able to work independently and committed to academic biomedical research. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Master's Degree in Biochemical Sciences with at least 5 years’ experience. Experience in lab administration, lab management and student training is preferred.
