Job Summary

This position is within ULAM’s technical services team. The technical services team is comprised of technicians that are proficient in several common laboratory animal techniques, mostly on non-USDA covered species. This position, together with the existing team, provides practical in-vivo services to laboratories lacking experienced animal handlers or who have limited personnel. In addition, this position will support other ULAM services areas, including general husbandry.


  • Perform various routes of test material administration as appropriate for species
  • Perform blood sample collections from various sites as appropriate for species
  • Identify proper storage conditions for samples collected and submit to laboratories as requested
  • Conduct general health monitoring, feeding and care; document clinical observations
  • Perform euthanasia & necropsy
  • Apply ear tags & perform tail biopsies
  • Perform other research manipulations as identified
  • Perform prescribed preventative and therapeutic treatments
  • Attend extensive training sessions at training core to meet proficiency standards
  • Perform or assist with incoming or outgoing shipments of mice
  • Record collected data into forms or spreadsheets; assist in data analysis as applicable
  • Facilitate coordination of research services in conjunction with animal care
  • Record time and services into recharge forms
  • Measure tumors; score & monitor
  • Attend services meetings with PI's laboratory staff, and participate in lab meetings
  • Perform data entry into Microsoft

Required Qualifications*

2-3 years of experience in a related field is required.
Bachelor's degree
ALAT certification by the American Association for Lab Animal Science (AALAS)
Ability to function independently as well as a team member in a team setting
This position requires considerable use of arms and legs and activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing,
walking, stooping and handling of materials which at times weigh as much as 50 lbs.
Must be able to push and pull equipment weighing up to 500 pounds
Must be able to work at a level of up to 6’ to 7’ above the floor
Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to
This position can be underfiilled at the senior level with a candidate that has a bachelor's degree and 1-2 years of experience.

Desired Qualifications*

Bachelor’s Degree in Science with previous paid research laboratory experience that included animal handling.

LAT certification by the American Association for Lab Animal Science

Degree in Veterinary Technology

Knowledge of mouse breeding procedures and practices

Work Schedule

40 hours per week. Start time may vary. Weekends and holidays are required on rotation with other
services laboratory staff
