Job Summary

Facilitate, coach and train individuals in applying continuous improvement philosophies and practices to their daily work according to Michigan Medicine Quality Department Performance Improvement Division methodologies.  Design, direct and conduct cross-functional, institutionally strategic healthcare projects that optimize quality and safety, lead in value creation for individuals and population health, enhance the patient experience, improve financial performance, improve diversity and inclusion and develop employees.  
The Continuous Improvement Specialist Senior will work under the supervision of the Performance Improvement Director and Manager(s) and in collaboration with other Continuous Improvement Specialists, faculty, operational leaders and staff.  

 

Responsibilities*

[30%] Collaborate in the design, direction and conducting of more advanced and complex projects/learning experiments that improve quality, value, cost-effectiveness, and other University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) goals to achieve our mission and vision, assuming increasing responsibility for the work direction, as appropriate.

  • Apply analytical methods in applying problem solving and operations improvement skills and knowledge utilizing and integrating lean, six sigma, process improvement and rapid cycle approaches and methodologies.
  • Collaborate with business process owners and provide project scoping direction. 
  • Assist in the design and implementation of performance monitoring systems. 
  • Utilize data systems for collecting, reviewing and analyzing data, including developing, utilizing and maintaining data files.
  • Apply IT application skills in preparing status reports, progress updates, recommendations and other documentation requested by customers.  
  • Deliver interim and final presentations on projects to customers, leaders, guests and team members, often utilizing A3 thinking/formatting, PowerPoint and other computer programs. 
  • Coordinate and supervise projects conducted by mentees such as embedded PI staff, PI students and fellows. 
  • Manage increasingly more complex projects, including scope, schedule and budget using project management tools and techniques.  

[20%] Establish and maintain positive relationships with customers including Michigan Medicine leaders, clinical chairmen, administrators, department heads, manager and supervisors, project sponsors, faculty staff and team members.

  • Partner with areas to support their overall transformation efforts as it pertains to continuous performance improvement. 
  • Collaborate with customers to identify and resolve conflicts and barriers to performance improvement.
  • Collaborate with multiple Michigan Medicine departments on projects, especially for problem solving, budget planning, benchmarking, staffing, inventory management, capacity management and sustainment plans.  

 [20%] Assist in the design, development and deployment of the Michigan Medicine Performance Improvement strategies, including but not limited to:

  • Teach and improve existing continuous improvement and pilot education programs, principles and projects to administration, faculty and staff throughout Michigan Medicine.
  • Spread of the daily management system, interval training and other learning models. 
  • Collaborate in the improvement of current and development of new PI learning resources (websites, social media, education modules, etc.) 
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of educational programs and materials related to lean principles, process improvement, group process, change management and project management. 
  • Develop innovative strategies to achieve project objectives in a timely, cost-effective manner.  
  • Promote the use of PI trainings and system solutions to support teams in facilitating their own problem-solving work.

[20%] Provide consultation to Michigan Medicine managers, staff and faculty related to process improvement. 

  • Provide mentored consultation on the application of lean principles, process improvement tool/techniques and change management strategies, as needed. 
  • Facilitate effective meetings and workshops using group process and problem solving thinking, tools and techniques.  
  • Facilitate group process while proactively identifying and raising issues and make recommendations to the appropriate individuals/leaders.

[10%] Participate in continued learning and development of skills, knowledge and application by remaining informed about and open-minded to new ideas, processes and approaches for continued performance improvement.  

  • Participate in identified learning and development opportunities. 
  • Participate in and actively contribute to team meetings. 
  • Collaborate with other PI team members and departments, as appropriate. 
  • Provide mentorship for specific, identified individuals (as assigned) as skills and experience develops.  
  • Attend relevant competency training, staff development in-services and conferences to maintain and improve knowledge base, competency and skills.

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications (Senior Level): 

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering is required.  
  • Ability to know and apply the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of industrial engineering including, but not limited to, work measurement, utilization studies, workflow analysis and application of simulation and modeling techniques to increase quality, efficiency and/or capacity.  
  • Working knowledge of GE simulation, Simulate, Excel, Access, Tableau, Sequel and other analytical tools to complete data analyses and mathematical modeling.  
  • 6-12 years of experience in applying continuous improvement methodologies such as PDCA, lean, six sigma, total quality management and/or rapid cycle improvement in the work setting is required.
  • Excellent communication skills demonstrated in oral, written and presentation/teaching formats.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (includes coaching and feedback), as demonstrated by the ability to work effectively with individuals and/or teams, across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to transfer knowledge and determine/provide appropriate learning experiences for customers.
  • Demonstrated change management and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated time management, organizational and project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal direction, as appropriate.

 Required Qualifications (Intermediate Level): 

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering is required.

Desired Qualifications*

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Certificate in Continuous Performance Improvement, such as lean, lean six sigma or other professional certification, is preferred.
