About the Department

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations drives the fundraising and alumni relations activities of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.


The Director of Alumni Engagement is responsible for working with the Sr. Director of Major Gifts and Alumni Relations on the development and implementation of the strategic plan related to Ross alumni programs and initiatives.  This includes coordination and communication with the Alumni Board of Governors, alumni clubs, and reunion planning and execution.  This individual reports directly to the Sr. Director of Major Gifts and and Alumni Relations.


Alumni Engagement Strategy and Management

  • In partnership with Sr. Director of Major Gifts and Alumni Relations, develop and implement a strategic plan for Ross alumni engagement.

  • Execute the strategy with the Alumni Board of Governors (ABOG) which is a working advisory group to assist in the creation, promotion and implementation of alumni activities.

  • Working with ABOG executive committee, execute high quality meetings and advance goals of the ABOG.

  • Facilitate student involvement with alumni prior to graduation through interactions with ABOG members.

  • Assure the involvement of alumni with the School by coordinating alumni clubs and providing support to their activities.

  • In partnership with Sr. Director of Development and Alumni Relations, develop strategy and coordinate implementation.

  • In partnership with Sr. Director of Development and Alumni Relations, develop strategy for AlumniAdvantage program and RossTalks events and coordinate implementation.

  • Promote alumni engagement with the School by developing, planning, and implementing annual reunion events for students, alumni, organizations and the community.

  • Partner with Marketing and Communication on social media, websites and online marketing campaigns for alumni relations.

  • Serve as focal point for inquiries and issues about alumni, alumni activities and events from various constituencies of the School.

Relationship Management

  • Provide leadership in developing partnerships and maintaining strong lines of communication with colleagues within Ross Development, across Ross, the Office of University Development, and other schools and units across the University to ensure effective collaboration and synergy in achieving the school’s key alumni engagement goals and objectives. 

  • The Director of Alumni Engagement will work closely with the Senior Director of Development and Alumni Relations when developing alumni engagement strategy to achieve goals.

  • Work cooperatively with the Ross management team to ensure the department as a whole operates in a smooth and coordinated manner. Foster a collaborative environment by soliciting feedback from Ross management colleagues and keeping them well informed of strategies to maximize alumni engagement.

Staff Management

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the alumni relations staff in supporting alumni engagement and programmatic priorities.

  • Set goals for the alumni relations team and evaluate their progress in the following areas: coordination of alumni clubs, fundraising, communication and enhancement of Alumni Advantage, coordination and implementation of reunion events, student/alumni involvement and other areas as identified.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years of experience in advancement, alumni relations, development or marketing; or an equivalent combination of experience and education

  • Ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy, with a commitment to confidentiality
    Strategic planning, organizational, administrative and budgetary experience

  • Candidate must possess the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships and effective channels of communication at multiple levels inside and outside the organization with a proven ability to successfully interact with a diverse group of people

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with an engaging and genuine personal style and a high level of sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings, including the ability to work diplomatically with partners and represent Ross and the University of Michigan

  • Demonstrated ability in problem identification and resolution with excellent analytical and critical thinking skills is essential

  • A general level of comfort when dealing with high net worth individuals, and an ability to maintain discretion, and high level of confidentiality, when dealing with significant benefactors

  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • An ability and willingness to quickly learn Michigan Ross and the University’s history, mission, demographics, faculty, current programs, departments, etc., as well as the University culture to be able to persuasively articulate how Michigan and the business school distinguishes itself from peer institutions

  • Proven success working in a multifaceted development environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a proven record of working collaboratively with others

Desired Qualifications*

  • Progressively responsible experience in a higher education setting

  • Graduate degree

  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies and procedures

  • Experience working with non-profit boards

  • Requires the ability to travel to various locations to conduct work and deliver materials

  • Domestic and international travel will be required

  • Will require work during early mornings, nights, and/or weekends
