For over 100 years, the Martha Cook Building at the University of Michigan has provided a unique residence hall for 140 undergraduate and graduate women, fostering a dynamic and diverse community founded on friendship and tradition. An extensive network of over 4,000 alumnae maintain their ties to the Building through participation in reunion events throughout the year, and through their generosity strive to maintain the historical integrity of the Building. Additionally, their philanthropy provides scholarships that enable today’s residents to become part of the Martha Cook tradition. Martha Cook is part of University Housing, in Student Life, which houses 9,500 undergraduate students overall and provides residential programming and services for all on-campus communities.

Job Summary

The Director of Alumnae Relations and Traditions cultivates the two foundations of the community’s legacy: preserving the unique culture and traditions of the Martha Cook experience while students are residents, and engaging them when alumnae as valued members of the Martha Cook community. This role will be the first point of contact for residents engaging in the life of the building, and will work with students and staff to execute events for residents and alumnae. The role will also lead efforts in alumnae relations, leveraging the knowledge and expertise of the Martha Cook Building Board of Governors to maintain an engaged alumnae community. This position reports through University Housing, while working closely with University Development to execute strategy.



  • Build relationships with and act as liaison to the MCB alumnae community. Plan and attend alumnae functions to encourage robust involvement and to identify potential donors. Provide tours to visiting alumnae and their families.
  • Maintain and monitor status of alumnae scholarship and preservation endowments, making recommendations to the MCB Board of Governors as appropriate, in alignment with Student Life scholarship protocols. Execute stewardship for donors including writing and coordinating thank you notes for gifts. Managing awarding of scholarships.
  • Design and execute communications plan with MCB community; write and design digital communications; manage volunteers to produce alumnae newsletter; liaise with Development to ensure all fundraising communications meet requirements.
  • Attend MCB Board of Governors meetings and committees and provide reports.


  • Submit alumnae engagement interactions to university’s data management team.
  • Provide information and consultation at the request of Student Life Development to support development efforts. Assist in donor visits led by Development.



  • Provide leadership to residents by attending sit-down dinners, Friday afternoon teas, house meetings and social activities of the Building.
  • Serve as lead event coordinator for cultural events; work closely with the MCB student government, Board of Governors, and Dining to execute events while maintaining budgets, traditions, and the student vision.
  • Make recommendations and provide consultation on aspects of operations and physical building that relate to the cultural heritage of MCB; provide input throughout planning process to find solutions appropriate for MCB tradition. Train new staff in MCB’s unique heritage.
  • Serve as source of information about MCB traditions for current and prospective residents. Co-advise and assist student government. Recruit student leaders to chair event committees. Provide tours and information to prospective residents and their families.
  • Work with students to incorporate philanthropy into the MCB culture.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in higher education, alumni relations, development, or not-for-profit sector.
  • Demonstrated event planning experience, including event budget management.
  • Strong writing skills across platforms, including digital marketing, articles, and correspondence.
  • Ability to manage data using database tools.

  • Experience working with a customer relationship management (CRM) system and/or email platform.
  • Strong Internet skills, including research, the use of social media, and basic website management.
  • Strong leadership skills, including management of volunteers.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work independently.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills.

Additional Information

Please Note:  Relocation will not be offered for this position.

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility

This position will be responsible for purchasing some materials for traditional events from university suppliers and/or outside vendors, tracking these purchases and reconciling them. The position will also, with information from Student Life Business and Finance, track gift funds and scholarship amounts.

Working conditions

Weekend and evening work will be required, driven by event planning.

Physical requirements

Job includes giving tours of the building.
