Job Summary

The Respiratory Technician position within the Adult Respiratory Care Department assesses the care needs regarding basic therapies of patients for whom respiratory care services are ordered. They initiate and perform basic respiratory care techniques and blood gas analysis. As part of the healthcare inpatient team, Respiratory Technicians work closely with respiratory therapists, nurses and other hospital staff in delivery patient services and assuring safety.


  • Completes training and demonstrates proficiency in all competencies, age-specific or otherwise, that are required of technicians who are delivering patient services.
  • Performs basic respiratory care and laboratory services such as, analysis of blood gases and electrolytes from arterial/venous samples; calibration, maintain and troubleshooting of blood gas analyzers and performs EKG diagnostic testing
  • Adheres to CLIA/CAP regulatory guidelines, as well as, Department and Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Stocks and maintains designated areas with appropriate respiratory care/blood analysis supplies and performs equipment rounds and compressed gas cylinder management
  • Is responsible for learning new technical devices and clinical procedures when applicable.
  • Reports off on services to on-coming staff and communicates pertinent information regarding critical values of patient status to bedside caregivers and Department leadership.
  • Attends shift and general staff meetings and follows procedures for accurate and complete entries on medical-legal documents and the patient’s electronic health record.
  • Candidates with specific respiratory care training/certification, duties include performing sputum inductions, performing checks on aerosol and oxygen therapy, and assists in performing intra-tracheal aspiration.
  • Other duties could include re-processing of moveable equipment/devices; High Level Disinfection (HLD) of bronchoscopes, airway devices and other medical devices; set-up and testing of equipment such as ventilators, cpap/bipap machines, nitric oxide delivery machines and other medical devices
  • Performs other job related duties.

Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum requirement is a high school diploma and some college level training (ie, Respiratory Therapy Program student), or other health related college training/degree or medical certification.
  • Demonstrates the ability to listen, comprehend and communicate efficiently (both verbally and in written forms).
  • Demonstrates the ability to function appropriately in emergency and time-constraint situations.

Desired Qualifications*

  • A college degree in respiratory care, science, education or other related healthcare field of study.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

Additional Information

This position functions under the supervision of a clinical/technical specialist and respiratory therapy supervisor who are licensed by Michigan Department of Community Health’s Board of Respiratory Care. This position involves physical and mental effort in job duties, ie, assisting patients, moving equipment, bending, reaching, periods of standing/walking, keyboarding, and providing emotional support to patients and families. There is frequent use and exposure to disinfectant agents and hand cleaners in all healthcare settings. The position may be prone to fatigue and infrequent opportunities for relaxation. It also involves working in a potentially hazardous environment of infectious diseases, high-pressure medical gases and other related conditions.
