Job Summary

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute ( is a global leader in conducting research and development that address technological and behavioral issues in the safety of surface motor vehicle transportation. The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute is seeking research technician assistance on several research projects related to the behavioral aspects of traffic safety and transportation, with a particular focus on aging and transportation. The work involves collecting data from research participants, field data collection, reviewing literature, record keeping, basic analysis of data, writing, and presentation of research results.


Duties will include recruiting, enrolling, scheduling, handling and payment of research participants, as well as subjective and objective data reduction and analysis, review and summary of literature, and written documentation of research results. Specific duties will include, but not be limited to, conducting in-person health assessments of older adult research participants, administration of questionnaires, and visual inspections of participant vehicles.

Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor’s degree in a behavioral or health science field (e.g., Psychology, Public Health), is required.
  • Must have excellent skills with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience using statistical software packages such as SAS is a plus.
  • Windows PC proficiency is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a team as well as demonstrated initiative and critical-thinking skills are required.
  • Strong communication skills are required.

Desired Qualifications*

At least one year of research experience is desirable. Familiarity with Human Subject Protocols in a research environment is highly desirable as well as experience dealing with the requirements of an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Experience and/or a background in aging or older adults is also desirable. The position will participate in preparation of written documentation in regard to both IRB protocols (dealing with the handling of Human Subjects) and the presentation of research results.

The Behavioral Sciences Group works to enhance safe mobility for all ages by deepening our understanding of the social and behavioral issues important to transportation. Using innovative research approaches, the group: evaluates the effects of public policy and intervention programs that promote safe driving; expands knowledge of the social and behavioral factors related to high-risk driving behavior; investigates social, behavioral, and cognitive factors related to advanced automotive technologies; and prevents traffic injuries and fatalities through the development /evaluation of programs that intervene against factors related to driving behavior and crashes. The group is committed to making its research findings accessible, applicable, and available to organizations and individuals to enhance safe mobility. The successful candidate will work primarily on the LongROAD Project, a longitudinal study of aging and driving (
