Job Summary

The Grant Review and Analysis Office is seeking an experienced Research Administration professional to serve as a liaison between the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor Veterans Administration hospital by providing Pre- and Post-award support and guidance for the VA campus. This position will work with faculty/staff across both organizations, providing services that range from expertise and consultation to daily award management / preparation of required documentation, while serving as a liaison with the Dean’s Office for activities related to VA research administration.

Responsibilities*

The goal is to support and maintain VA research activities within the VA Office of Research. This position has responsibility for handling Pre- and Post-Award research administration and financial oversight related to sponsored project activities. The Pre- and Post-award functions will be carried out in a direct project support capacity for the VAH and the jointly held faculty at the U-M. Key to the position will be consistent communication and customer service – to the VAH and UM. The position will functionally report to the Director in the VAH Office of Research and administratively report to the U-M Medical School Grant Review & Analysis Office.

Pre-award responsibilities include:
o Advises and assists in the development, preparation, and submission of grant and contract proposals through the VA, especially MERIT awards
o Develops budgets and completes VA required forms, ensuring that all applications meet sponsor and VAH guidelines.

Post-Award responsibilities include:
o Reviewing terms and conditions of sponsored projects and providing oversight by monthly monitoring, projecting and financial updating of sponsored projects.
o Preparing and reviewing financial transactions including monitoring appropriateness for grant funding initiating corrective action as needed to resolve discrepancies.
o Assisting the PI with renewals, extension paperwork, and other reports as required.

Other:
o Assists Director in the VAH Office of Research and Associate Direct of Post-Award Research with projects as needed. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

Requires a minimum of 2 – 3 years progressively responsible experience in pre and post award administration as well as a bachelor's degree or equivalent educational and work experience. Demonstrated work experience in financial accounting is expected as is budgeting, assembling and managing complex projects. Demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines, and work in a collaborative team environment is required. The ideal candidate values working in a team and service based environment, with the ability to work independently, demonstrating a high of resourcefulness, motivation and accountability. Attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and displaying a service-oriented attitude are essential. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to sponsored projects and financial systems is essential.

Desired Qualifications*

Demonstrated communication and accounting skills, a willingness to counsel others on matters related to sponsored projects, and a willingness to learn new contexts (VAH) related to sponsored projects. Candidates must desire work in a collaborative team environment with the ability to work across multiple units and institutions. Experience with electronic proposal submission systems and with real time financials. Knowledge of VA research funding and experience working with VA appointments preferred.

Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm

Additional Information

Please note this is a 2-year term-limited position with the potential for extensions, pending annual position review and funding. The position is intended to be funded through an ongoing Interpersonal Agreement (IPA) between the VA and UM.
