The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan has an exciting opening for an Audience Development Manager to join the association’s innovative marketing and communications team.

The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan (AAUM) is an organization that nurtures lifelong relationships with and among current and future Michigan alumni and the University. The Audience Development Manager will lead the membership program to strategically plan, create, schedule, and evaluate productive, high-quality, cost-effective growth efforts to recruit and retain members for the Alumni Association in order to advance the organization’s transformation vision. 

  • Develop a deep understanding of a wide range of alumni audiences and become the expert of the alumni audiences. Identify key trends of each segment and prepare strategies in order to reach and market to each segment.
  • Manage and aggressively identify and implement opportunities to grow our membership base and optimize performance to keep a healthy and engaged member group. With the membership team, build a cohesive plan and strategy for acquisition and retention.
  • Develop data-driven, cross-channel revenue strategy with the help of the larger data analytics and digital team. Develop and maintain an audience growth (revenue) model, and develop impactful, actionable reporting to inform short and long-term decision-making.
  • Oversee membership expense and revenue budget and be financially responsible by bringing in a strong business mindset. Lead efforts like the membership financial model, forecasting, budgeting, reconciliation etc.
  • Work closely with marketing manager to provide hands-on insights around the development of innovative strategies and solicitation schedules using mail, telemarketing, Internet/e-mail and other programs & media as appropriate.
  • Constantly evaluate new social/digital platforms, marketing services for audience development maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry.
  • Utilize and encourage subscription/ membership best-practices across channels or platforms through benchmarking and awareness key marketing trends.
  • Provide insights for the development and implementation of a comprehensive stewardship and engagement programs for members.
  • Build supportive and collaborative internal relationships to inform, design, advocate, and market the long-term business objectives and service role of membership at the Association.
  • Work closely with membership team and other program areas, monitor project process and communicate monthly reporting to staff to ensure revenue goals are achieved.
  • Be able to communicate audience/membership vision, work with various cross-functional teams and stay on-course for developing this area in a strategic manner.
  • Effectively manage and supervise the team and provide overall leadership as an audience development expert on the team.
  • Provide organizational leadership by demonstrating AAUM core values: All In, Serving Heart and Solution Seeker and helping other staff members demonstrate those values.
  • Support University Relations efforts by demonstrating AAUM value to campus units/partners (i.e., schools/colleges, units, campuses).
  • Work with AAUM staff members to gain a clear and consistent understanding for the details of the strategic transformation and feel equal ownership of every piece of it, including pieces for which there is not direct responsibility.
  • Be inclusive and collaborative with every other member of the staff and every other team. Operate as a critical contributing member of the staff to complete objectives in many different areas in order to move the whole organization toward strategic transformation.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Staff team and Alumni Association events.
  • Provide staff support to the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, its committees and other volunteers. 
  • Participate on Alumni Association and other University committees as required.
  • Attend appropriate team and staff meetings.
  • Remain current with respect to technology and resources.
  • Share knowledge through internal communication.
  • Represent the Alumni Association at University and alumni functions.
  • Support Association vision and transformation goals.

Supervision Received:

Direct supervision is received from the Director of Marketing.

Supervision Exercised:

Supervision is exercised over the Audience Development Coordinator. May coordinate the work of some support staff.


Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of a proven track record in membership and/or a subscription based business as an audience manager (or similar).
  • A proven track record in leading, planning and execution efforts for audience acquisition, engagement and retention with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to think strategically, including creating a vision for audience-centric campaigns, analyzing data, extracting trends and applying findings to improve programmatic efforts to meet the transformation objectives for the Association.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and executing a strategic plan.
  • Strong experience with revenue forecasting and budgeting.
  • The ability to provide creative leadership and innovative ideas especially using new media and digital channels.
  • The ability to manage effectively, both people and programs and to carry out the many responsibilities of the office including planning, resource allocation, budget allocation, and supervision.
  • A can-do approach to problems with a positive energy and approach to developing solution strategies.
  • The capacity and ability to develop talent in a holistic, supportive manner and an ability to stay collaborative with cross-functional teams,
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in team environments.
  • Proven ability to manage many tasks concurrently, continually setting priorities on emerging requirements and changing timelines.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience working with a digital business, with experience of implementing growth strategies for audience development with a multi-platform approach.
